Actually, the first Svoboda and the second Svoboda are 2 different people, not related to each other (see both of them here: http://www.nhlpa.com/inside-nhlpa/certi ... agent?ln=S" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. His current agent is the ex-MTL player).FLPensFan wrote:Really odd for Sobotka to leave. Just like it was odd for Armstrong to publicly state term/money amounts offered to Sobotka. Armstrong stated they offered him anywhere from 1-5 years term, north of 3M a year. Was going to the KHL really worth less than 1M extra a year?mikey287 wrote:The timing of the Ott deal makes sense. No question Ott is their silver or bronze medal here...Sobotka was leaps and bounds better than him down the stretch for St. Louis...
Sobotka gets $4 mil per year in the KHL, opt-out after each of the year of the deal to go back to the NHL...
I blame Petr Svoboda....as it is rumored that Sobotka just hired him as his agent....after Sobotka left Svoboda in favor of Steve Bartlett a few months ago. Odd all around.
According to this article, GM Armstrong says they offered him $2.7M / 1 year or $3M/year for 2 years.
http://www.stltoday.com/sports/hockey/p ... 5ecce.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
According to Czech media, the Omsk contract is $4/year for 3 years BUT Sobotka has the option to return to NHL after the 1st or the 2nd year without any need to compensate Omsk. So it's basically a sequence of 3 one-year contracts with the player's option to renew.
Importantly, the $4M is after-tax, so it's basically equivalent to $7M in the US.

David Moss signing in Switzerland. 2 year deal with a 1 week out clause, should he find NHL work in the next week. Per Andy Strickland.

Blue bar is Corsi when they are on the ice with Sobotka, red is without him.
The Blues have 3.5 mm left against the cap even after signing Ott. They are paying 2.6mm a year for two years. Add another 1.4 which probably gets you Sobotka even though his 4mm in Russia is net, and you still have 2mm left. Dumb move letting him go.

Strong correlation of lazy and/or less talented players benefitting from Sobotka's game - which is 100% work and 200% grind. He left over $300K. The Blues offered $2.7 mil on 1 year, he asked for $3 mil. Blues would not negotiate. He walked.

Lot of money and term for a Michael Peca-type player, but he was already making the $$$, so not surprising. Glad the Pens aren't carrying that contract because Dubinsky isn't that good and eats-up salary cap room.canaan wrote:he got 6 years, 5.85 a yearSolidSnake wrote:Dubinsky reupped with Columbus

Re: Non-Penguins Offseason Moves 2014
But as Mikey said (and today Sobotka confirmed directly during his press conference), the player wanted a 1-year contract (I'm guessing he wanted to negotiate freely next year). And STL indeed would not negotiate about the $300K that were between what the team offered and what Sobotka wanted in order to stay. If Sobotka strongly felt he is worth more than $3 mil after next year, signing a multi-year contract at around $3 mil/year (the 2-year contract was exactly at $3 mil) did not make sense.slappybrown wrote:Actually, last month they apparently went 3 and 3+:mikey287 wrote:Strong correlation of lazy and/or less talented players benefitting from Sobotka's game - which is 100% work and 200% grind. Refusing to give him the 300k was really stupid, particularly given they gave most of that money to Ott anyways.

That salary is just atrocious for Columbus on so many levels. Teams continue to bury themselves in cap nightmare.brwi wrote:Lot of money and term for a Michael Peca-type player, but he was already making the $$$, so not surprising. It would be a cap nightmare if Columbus spent to the cap. They have $16M in space left with basically just Johansen left to sign. The team overpaid Dubinsky for sure, but it's not really a concern to pay him a little extra to keep him.

Columbus has their own personal cap that they don't want to go over and they've reached it.
So to me, they didn't spend their money wisely at all.

I can't remember what he's asking for but they're really far apart. He wants to be paid as if he's a perennial 30 goal scorer rather than a player who has played one good season.

Re: Non-Penguins Offseason Moves 2014
I've heard the disagreement is more term than money. He wants long years, but CBJ isn't willing to budge on more than like a 3 year deal.
