There's no reason for Horton to retire unless he hates free money.

I do hate free money. Maybe I should retire.

I feel like the NHL should step in for these (pretty terrible) situations, assume the responsibility of the rest of the contract and free up the team in question.

I'm sure that won't be a popular opinion around here, because of Pronger.

Whatever's going on with pronger is already protected by league policy. Seems like the answer is to get your big contracts insured. I don't think anything needs changed for these cases.

Even if Horton never plays again, they get the insurance, so its cap dump and they opened up space. Kudos to Nonis on this one.

Columbus...I'm not sure what theyre thinking...if they trade Wisniewski, okay, but otherwise, it puts this team in tougher cap situation. They gave significant raises to Dubinsky, Foligno and Bobrovsky.

I think Columbus is going to make more trades than this, taking this contract on is just a bad idea. They were getting relief atleast with Horton.
Horton's contract was NOT insured. So, COlumbus was paying him for nothing. It's even, imo.
He was on LTIR though..

The team still has to pay Horton, even if it doesn't count towards the cap.

It's a business deal.

No matter what, the BJs had to pay Horton his money. Instead of wasting money on paying Horton to each nachos...they're going to pay Clarkson to suck on the ice.

For a team like Columbus, this probably works out for the best.

No, because the contract wasn't insured. If it was...then yes, and there is no way the CBJ does that trade. Whoever didn't put insurance on the contract should be fired.

It would be worse if it was a team that has unlimited resources and spends to the cap. For a self-imposed cap team like Columbus this is a better option.

Nathan Horton is never going to play again. There is at the very least a small chance for Clarkson to be better than he has been.

Unless you can get a 1st or top rated prospects you want which could still happen.

If Jagr gets bonuses that kick in next year will Florida pay them which means they are state tax free?

And it's not even a cap issue, that can't spend that much money on a wasted roster spot. They will have an easier time trading Clarksin later with salary retained than finding a suitor for Horton in the summer.

If the Panthers can trade Jagr for a 1st...I'll buy you a beer. :)

NJ is paying the bonuses, as far as I read.

Very few contracts are insured and still some others are uninsurable. Based on Horton's injury history, I would guess that it was uninsurable. Roughly, 5-9 contracts per team are insured out of 45-50...

They'll never trade Clarkson unless they are taking on something horrendous like Toronto did.

I think CBJ loses big time with that contract. If Horton retires, toronto basically sheds that salary for free of charge.
Horton's contract is not insured, so they were saddled with paying him the full amount he was due. So they are probably ecstatic to being playing someone that can actually get out there and play.

Good for both sides. Clarkson plays Columbus' style, stick the puck to the wall, attempt wraparounds and fall down...they're paying that money anyhow, might as well get some on-ice...something...for it...Horton can still collect money and not count against the Leafs cap during the season...

Clarkson sucks for 5.5 million or whatever he makes. He doesn't suck for 2 million. So they are throwing away the difference. Only problem is if they actually start spending to the cap, but by the time their young guys start making money he'll be off the books
