The top 3 picks are all lotto drafts. The worst the last place team could get is 4th overall. It used to be the worst the last place team could get was 2nd overall.
That's in effect next year, which I already posted on the previous page (now 2 pages ago).
This year, the 14 non-playoff teams are in the lottery. The winner of the lottery gets 1st pick. 2nd-14th is determined by standings.

The top 3 thing will be next year, 2016. Only the #1 pick is lottery this year, 2015.
Well, hard to imagine he's lost too much as a second round pick, who is performing well, from just a handful of months ago. Is there any reason to believe he would not have approximately 2nd round value, ya think?
He might be "found money" to Buffalo in terms of this trade, but he's still an asset that carries value, right?
Like if Pittsburgh had called him for him and him alone, they wouldn't be say, "ya know, just have him, he won't sign with us..." they'd offer him to us for a 2nd though probably, right?
But yeah, it's a nice a piece to have for this trade because he might have pushed it over the top and Buffalo can justify it by saying, "eh, whatever..."
If word got out he wasn't signing i doubt they'd replenish the 2nd they used on him but who knows. My guess is they tossed his name in the deal knowing losing him was no problem since the best they'd get is a 2nd maybe

I ran it 200 consecutive times and CBJ won the lottery 37 times. Ottawa was 2nd with 20-something. Columbus and Buffalo getting the top two picks would be my preference, just for the sake of the franchises. Also wouldn't mind seeing the Wild walk away with McDavid or Eichel.

Their attendance is near the bottom of the league and the franchise could use some star power. I like Johansen, but he's not gonna put butts in the seats or attract new fans. Nothing attracts new fans like a highly touted young player.

I think if they can ice a healthy team, those attendance numbers wouldn't be a problem. No need to gift them a superstar player after one injury riddled season.

I'm somewhat of the mindset that gifting the best talent to the worst executives (looking at you, Winnipeg) is rewarding incompetence. If CBJ slips low enough to snag one of these really promising guys I'm okay with that.
