What do you play, the tuba?
that night? trombone.
Gaucho wrote:What if I simply like jazz?
yup... I have a jazz station or two on my pandora, but it's just for easy listening while I'm working. I don't know much of anything about advanced music techniques and theory, I just enjoy listening to it.
I've come across many jazz musicians who know so much theory, it actually becomes a hindrance. The best musicians will tell you it's important to know at least some theory --- I mean, you can't play a solo without that unless you force yourself to memorize all notes within a piece, but then you may find yourself in a live setting and fall flat on your face --- but then when you play to not be thinking about it too much because you lose a lot of your playing. A player should not sound like a mathematical equation. You want excitement and spontaneity in your playing.

May I suggest you get a copy of the Beauborg album from new-age artist Vangelis?:

I will admit to being a Vangelis fan, and I do own Beauborg on CD, but I don't really listen to it. It's long been rumored that Vangelis wanted out of his record contract with RCA, but RCA said that the contract required him to make one more album. So he gave them.... this. Back when I was an A/V and audio tech in college, I used this CD for speaker checks. It's actually quite good for that task, as the first few minutes includes highs, low bass, and stereo pans from side to side. The reaction I'd get from others never failed to amuse.
Not my cup of tea. It's just sound effects. Don't hit me. :)
At least there's something there. Go look up the many performances of John Cage's "4′33"".

Is old swing stuff like Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie considered jazz?

When did this become the music thread?

IPP = going into threads to read about a topic and finding nothing related to said topic.

Was just reading the Wikipedia article about this piece. I don't know what I find more annoying: The fact that it gets applause when it is 'performed', or that Wiki says it was 'conceived' over a two-year period and uses the word 'composed' to describe the finished product. Makes me want to punch a baby. Right in it's stupid baby face.

It's a joke on pseudo-intellectuals and artsy-fartsy types who think they hear art in that. I'd seriously like to slap those commentators in the end of the video with a stinkin' fish.

You don't believe that silence plays an important role in music?

Often times in music, it's not about what you play, but when you don't play it (or so my jazz teacher said in high school). But the complete silence act? That's just nonsense. It's like some modern art where they're being edgy just to be edgy.

This is a perfect example of my hatred for (apparently not all) jazz and it's musicians. Such an air of pompousness that exceeds every other genre put together.

This is not directed at c2i, but rather his jazz teacher.
