there's a different standard for candidates. they should be judged for not dressing formally enough, even if the manager is wearing a Hawaiian shirt and flip flops.
I suppose, I guess I have a problem with the loosening of the standards for attire not extending to the uncomfortable interviewing process. It only makes the situation more awkward for the candidate because they stick out like a sore thumb in their suit among the crowd.

That's the nice thing about having a work phone I guess... it gets put on the counter Friday night and isn't touched until Sunday and sometimes Monday.

As a software engineer, I would not work for a company if I was required to wear business casual every day. It's not just because of the dress code, but usually a dress code points to the fact that the company is really stuffy and bureaucratic and I have no interest in working for that type of business.

Though dress code would have no impact on what job I would take. If the money is good, the commute is good, and the atmosphere is good, I'll dress however they want.

Yeah. For me job selection is pretty much those three things and in that order. Though Money and Commute are 1a/1b. I really hate a bad commute. Dress isn't even on the radar.

I would probably put commute & clothing standards combined on the same level as money.

Where I work now, I can bike in at about $100 per year (tire repairs and brake replacements) vs Taking the bus for $1200/year. or driving in for $2080 parking +gas/maintenance.

I bike in, and having a loose dress code makes that considerably easier to do.

In terms of clothing, I only have to support one wardrobe, I'm not sure what it would cost to build a formal wardrobe right now, but I feel like i'm saving atleast $1000 per year there too.

I feel like I would need at least another $5K per year just to support a change from my current circumstance.

I managed to land at the only military building I've ever seen that doesn't have a shower, so I think biking is out for me even though it was part of the reason I wanted this job. I just can't see doing 8mi in the morning and then sitting at my desk for 9.5hrs without a shower.

As a code monkey, I think wearing a suit and tie is about the least conducive to a good work environment possible. Fortunately, that is not an issue, save for a few times when a previous manager wanted us to dress up when certain clients were coming in. This was kind of ridiculous since said clients were wearing t-shirts and jeans themselves.

I've been lucky, all the jobs I've had since I finished college(3)... they all have been business casual, and the last two we can wear jeans every day, just have to wear a shirt with a collar. So basically jeans and a polo and sneakers.. won't complain about that at all.

I'd have to be paid a good bit more than I make now to dress up in a suit or even a shirt and tie every day.

The only time I even have to wear Khakis right now is if some "big wig" decides to come in, and usually we get an email a couple days in advance on that. Always annoyed me though because would have to dress up and then the "big wig" would never even come back to our department.. just seemed so silly.

This deal with using "gross" to describe anything disagreeable.

Know what's gross? Shoving your nose in dog crap or puking on your shoes.

Telemarketers, for example, are annoying but not gross.

Business casual is fine for me...i would not work a job that required a suit every day unless the money was incredible.

Dress for success. Learn that lesson while you're young. It's a component of advancing your career.

They've been painting the walls in my building for the last 2 weeks. Today is the day they're doing it right outside my office. I'm pretty well trapped for the day.

I'm actually painting my unfinished basement ceiling and it's the biggest pita thing I've ever painted in my entire life. About 1/3 of the way finished. Hope I can get it done today.
