I agreed in principle to sell my truck. The buyer claims he has a brother in law that is a notary. They are in PA. He wants to bring his brother in law to transfer the title and avoid notary fees. Is thus legit?

Ask PFiDC, he's a notary in MD. But I think he bought his without taking a class or anything. Maybe he read the pamphlet.

My wife is a notary and I bring her on trips when I buy stuff for that very reason. She's notarized several titles for me. As long as the BIL is not named on the title it shouldn't make a difference. It doesn't in NC, anyway.

He did say BIL owns a used car lot..which makes me wonder, why not buy off of him. But it is a unique truck so maybe that's why.

Also, I'm doing it through eBay too. So I guess I might have some level of protection there as the final value fee is like 200 bucks.

The BIL owning a used lot makes the notary thing carry some weight. I wouldn't worry about it to be honest. Better than going to a UPS store to get it done. Last time I needed one in a hurry I had to find this little document place near the courthouse in Greensburg.

It's not notary fees he wants to avoid, it's taxes. Notary/title fees are maybe $100 total. The actual notary seal is $5.

That's my guess. Maybe not $500 but 1/2 price or something.

I guess PA is different. I haven't bought a car there in a long time.

In NC, the back of the title has a space on it to write up a transfer to another person. So you can sell the vehicle and get a notary stamp. Then you take the old title to the DMV and pay all that stuff there. They use Fair Market Value to calculate taxes and you pay them with the title fee, then state sends the new title to the new owner through the mail. By bringing my wife I literally save a bunch of hassle and $5.

Very little room for fraud since the title fees are done at the DMV and the value is based on the VIN also at the DMV, not the sales price.

Yeah, I'm not sure how this is gonna work cause usually you get the plate and everything (T tags) at the notary. Maybe he will bring that stuff with him, or he plans on trailering it home. Maybe I can just say no, and there's a notary down the street.

Just ignore me, then. In NC the plate stays with the seller. When I bought my last car I drove it 5hrs home with no plate with no problem. I defer to WK on this one.

Plate does stay wiyh the seller here. I'm just transferring the title. He would either slap a plate on it or get a new one.

Could also be that he isn't comfortable doing a private purchase alone and wants his car dealer BIL there. The fact it is done through ebay should protect you, I just wouldn't sign anything with a different dollar amount.

I'd spend half the budget and get a 2008-2010 BMW 535Xi. AWD, heated seats/wheel, 4 hooker trunk. Also available as a wagon. Less than $20K out the door with a nice aftermarket warranty.

Hopefully just have to pull the valve covers and change the VVT Solenoid.
If I have to replace the Camshaft sensor/sprocket/phaser I have to pull the whole front cover and throw a couple grand at it.
