The real tragedy is you missed fIREHOSE.

I somehow never saw them, despite several opportunities.

George Hurley can play the drums. :)

I have seen Mike Watt and that was of course awesome.

Ed Crawford lives in Pittsburgh, which is cool.

Crawford's new band FOOD is pretty good. Unfortunately, they've only released one EP so far, Four Pieces From Candyland.

Anyone watch the Concert for Valor last night? Only watched a bit, but from what I've seen so far the unabashed highlight was Zac Brown with Grohl and Boss covering 'Fortunate Son'.

Haven't gotten to the Metallica set yet, but I saw someone tweeted about it "Metallica just played 'Enter Sandman' on stage in Washington D.C. and France surrendered." So that's encouraging.

Coltrane’s Free Jazz Wasn’t Just “A Lot of Noise"

Which remind me that everyone's a freakin' critic.

So many professional (and amateur too) critics equate something they don't get or that doesn't reach them as a failure or terrible or whatever. It seems like some people don't understand that everything isn't meant for everybody. Taylor Swift isn't writing songs to satisfy me, but that doesn't mean she isn't doing something right for herself and her fans.

Look back through my posting history; I've been making this argument since the 1990s, or at least that the demise of the 'rock star' would be implicit in the rise of the so-called democratization of music.

I posted another cut the other day on the random thread, but that Coltrane/Tyner/Jones/Garrison quartet was pretty magical:

I was there, and Metallica crushed it. People were going ape**** where I was standing in the crowd. Really puts it in perspective how good they must have been in '89 to still be able to blow all the other acts out of the water in their 50s.

Rihanna was a pretty good performer as well.

Her guitar player is Nuno Bettencourt (one of my faves), so I'm looking forward to her set.

Despite the guitars being fairly low in the mix (understandable) I kept an ear out for him during her set as well.

I'm in the early stages of listening to the Coltrane discography in chronological order on Spotify and I would hope that his estate gets a piece of the action, but that might be a naive thought.

That was very weak on the RHCP side. Speaking of RHCP covers ive always liked their cover of Search and Destroy by Iggy and The Stooges.

One of the best tracks on the Beavis and Butthead Experience. It's a tossup for me between that and 99 Ways to Die.

I was debating on going down but I realized MetallicA would probably only play at most 5 songs and waiting there from 10am until the end of the night for 5 songs was not on my agenda. Maybe when I was 21 but not now. Still haven't watched the performance yet.
