Just wait till Eddie Vedder is thanking the RNR HOF for inducting Pearl Jam.

On talent alone he wipes the floor with half of the guitar players already inducted. Not sure why he hasnt.

It's always important to separate the idea of "talent" from "important artist"....and that's not even getting into the fact that the rock and roll hall of fame is kind of a ridiculous venture.

Let's think about two guitar players: Eddie Van Halen and Billy Gibbons.

It took me until I was in my 30s to appreciate either of those bands. As much I am hesitant to admit it, Van Halen was a truly good rock band. So why is Eddie an important artist? I would say that it's not because of his chops, but rather his ability to write really good hard rock songs. And Billy Gibbons? He's a pretty boiler plate blues rock player and there are thousands of "better" players out there (like SRV). But, frankly, who cares. The first 6 ZZ Top albums are essential listening for any real student of rock and roll.

They're both "important artists", but "talent" (aka impressive like that shredder at the music store) plays a pretty small role in my assessment of them.

Crosby's work ethic is high, therefore his talent level is meaningless in evaluating him as a hockey player. I mean, that's just silly talk.

Eddie Van Halen is one of the two most influential guitarists in rock history, the other of course being Jimi Hendrix. Page, Clapton, Beck (EVH's immediate contemporaries) are all fine musicians. But they were still smack on the edge of the instrument's known perimeter. EVH blew past that limit and took rock guitar playing into a completely higher plain of existence, bringing a virtuoso flair to the instrument that had never before been seen in the world. He is like the Chuck Yeager of rock guitar. EVH is simply the most innovative and creative guitarist of the rock era. Period. (Bring it, Hendrixphiles.)

I won't deny that EVH's songwriting chops are largely overlooked in the non-guitar player world. When you've got a guy who's so dazzling in their playing, it's easy to overlook the basics. But to those of us who have had a six-string at our sides for a while, I can say that grooving on the riffs from 'Unchained' or 'Drop Dead Legs' or even something from their latest record like 'Stay Frosty' is every bit as satisfying as nailing the flashy stuff from 'Eruption' or 'Beat It' or 'Hot For Teacher'.

Aside from his superb technical abilities, EVH also changed the way rock sounded (first guy to put a dual coil pickup from a Les Paul in a Strat body, for example). He also figured out that putting a rheostat between his amp's output and his speaker cab allowed him to run his amp at full chat without needing the volume to be ear bleed loud. Those are just supplementary bits of trivia.

Virtuosity does not make an artist.

He gets his props for many things, as he should, but I could really care less that he's a technically good guitar player.

As a band. 38 Special should get a nod. Moved the bar for Southern Rock while enjoying commercial success and longevity. Some may say Lynard Skynard is the ultimate rock band in that genre, but 38 Special took the genre and broke out into a more mainstream following.

Early Petty rocked and he put on a great show. Petty under Lynne and Dylan? Start drinking now.

If I go the symphony, then yes, I want to hear the best possible musicians (play someone else's art).

Perhaps not..... but it certainly does not make one not an artist, either.

And he's not 'technically good'. He plays the instrument like none other, before or since. If that is not the very embodiment of artistry, then I think it's safe to say that we have markedly different views on what that term means.

So let's have it..... who are the 'artists' among the guitar playing world?

EVH is absolutely an artist, but the fact that he is so technically gifted isn't an indicator of it (for me).

So what if the best musician to play the music is one who composed it?

That's such a screwed up logic that I can't even comprehend. It implies that Beethoven was somehow incapable of playing the music he wrote. The very best composers are also virtuoso musicians, perhaps on more than one instrument. The only reason you couldn't hear Beethoven play his symphonies is because there is only one of him.

Okay, so put it in the context of the ongoing discussion....... your logic implies that the best way to experience Van Halen music is to go see a tribute band like the Atomic Punks.
