EDIT: Wait, scratch that.....Engelland's deal is pure insanity.
Iggy got 30 goals last year. It isn't agood contract, but it is not even close to the Orpik or Engo ones.

Niskanen closing in on deal with Capitals. Can't wait to see for how much. Good for you, Nisky.

Nick Kypreos ‏@RealKyper 5m
Told Niskanen has already turned down 7 yrs in ballpark of 35m by one #NHL club. Safe to say he'll eventually sign the richest deal this yr
Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris 10s
As first reported by @CraigCustance, Matt Niskanen signs with the #caps. He gets $40M over seven years!

Our defense was so bad and 3 of them got 13.55 mill per year. What the hell is going on?

Nisky has one good year in his 8 seasons and the Caps give him nearly 6 million per for 7 years.

Unreal. But not as bad as the Orpik deal.

UFA d-men have been getting ridiculously overpaid for several years, but this year really broke the bank, and all common sense.

You can see why Pittsburgh and Nashville keep drafting d-men high up. You sure can't go out and get them in UFA without getting killed on the contracts.

Hopefully this organization learns it's lesson and locks up their young dmen long term before they "breakout". It will be interesting to see what kind of contract Despres gets. I wouldn't mind 3 years at $2m. He'll be a top 4 dman on this team (unless they trade him) every year of his next contract...

I agree, common sense went out the window with a lot of these defensemen contracts today. I mean, 5 years for Orpik with that kind of money? There's no way he's worth that. Not even close, and even if he is right now, in 3-5 years he won't be.

The two positive things I take away from the crazy defensemen signings today are:

1. The Pens did not partake in the crazy
2. I'm still not a fan of the Letang contract, but at least it doesn't seem as bad as it did previously.

I don't know if they were both taking the route of not wanting to flat out say "we went to a higher bidder" or what, but..

Both apparently wanted to stay in Pittsburgh until Shero and Bylsma got canned? Really? If they were content to think things were just FINE, no changes were needed, and things will be BETTER in Washington, then HAVE FUN. Sheesh.

Athletes are humans too.

If you worked for a company and it did fairly well and you liked management and your boss, you'd probably stay for a little less than going for more to a competitor. If ownership changed that and you weren't sure how things would be and you got offered more from a competitor, chances are it would be the time to go for the $.

It's not the perfect analogy, but the underlying point is just human nature.

Not sure what they are smoking in DC, but I want some of it. Orpki's deal is like  I would be shocked if Orpik plays three more years let alone five

Still I think the most crazy deal is Engo's. $2.9 million per year??

NHL insanity.

I see what you are saying -- but my reaction to their praise of the Capitals despite the fact that Washington has recently had their own upheaval:

I suppose I shouldn't expect either them to say anything different, though. Have fun with Ted, boys. :thumb:

Yeah, I'm in no means supporting what Caps did on either signing. Too much and too long for Orpik and too long for Nisky but I guess the owner is the issue in Washington more than the front office was.

Keep on keeping on, Teddy.

I wonder if before they hired Trotz they told him that he has to win NOW or else. Caps are loading up for bear but not sure that is going to happen overnight and then they have these bad contracts to deal with.

I think the Niskanen contract is a bit long, but you give that to get the guy you want. I don't think that one is bad though. I'm guessing there are other teams that would have given him that but were scared away by the early asking AAV. Orpik on the other hand...I don't think there is another gm that would have given him that term or AAV.
