Small note, it isn't over $5M, it is $4.05M. $4.5M (Purcell) + $1.15M (Crombeen) - $1.6M (retained Gagner).

Plus, they need to fill the two roster spots, say $1M for the one roster spot. That leaves $3M to use to make a splash with. And, you are paying that $1.6M for two years, and that counts against your cap. All for $3M in space...
You are missing Nate Thompson in your math, no?
Yes, I was not including that at all. I was just talking about the Gagner related deals.

The Thompson trade would add salary ($1.6M), but open another roster spot as well. So, overall, they opened $5.65M cap space and 3 additional roster spots.

MTL acquires P.A Parenteau from COL. I believe Daniel Briere is headed to COL in return.
Colorado is attempting to acquire the clutches players. Let's see how it works out, Cotton.

I see where I screwed up. When I skimmed the article I misread it. Took it as TB had $10 million in space BEFORE the trade.

The Flames were apparently straight trolling people at the draft (or draft day in general in the case of Ribeiro). Made offers to Phoenix and Carolina to take Ribeiro and Cam Ward off their hands as long as they included their first round picks in the deal (7th for Carolina, 12th for Phoenix). Teams might be desperate to shed salary, but I don't think any team will ever be desperate enough to throw away a high first round pick just to dump a contract.

Strong comments from Ryan Johansen in Columbus today:

“I’ve earned more than a two- or three-year deal with my play,” Johansen said. “It seems a little disrespectful, to be honest.

“I want to play in Columbus, and I want to be a Blue Jacket, but I want to get this done. It seems like a slap in the face.”

Yikes.

Johansen has 1 season that can be characterized as anything other than "Bad". If he were a UFA, he could probably get some dumb team to overpay him, but he hasn't earned more than a qualifying offer.

Can't say I am impressed with how Bergevin/MTL is handling Josh Gorges. That guy gives everything he has every shift and isn't that bad of a deal at 3.9mil. He's also the regular partner for PK Subban and a team leader. Maybe tipping him off before trying to trade him to a team he has a NMC(Toronto) would have been a little more professional.

He's only really played 2 years in the NHL. His development is on a pretty good curve for playing on a team like Columbus without much surrounding talent.

I don't think he's a 6 mil kind of guy, but 5 years, $4.5-5 mil seems to be the kind of contract he *should* be getting at this point. He's definitely earned it, and Columbus doesn't exactly have people who can replace that production.

I don't like to pay players on potential...but there's no chance he's not a stud. I'd give him a Taylor Hall-ish deal and have no qualms about it...

Players need to learn to earn their way. Making it through your elc doesnt entitle you to an 8 figure contract. Better players than him have had to take actual second contracts. Much better than him.

He wants a 8 year deal. Columbus wants a bridge contract.

Take the bridge contract, prove yourself, and prove to the Blue Jackets that you are worth every dime that you want. It really isn't hard.

Jason Spezza to Dallas. What a 1-2-3 punch at center for them now. Seguin-Spezza-Eakin.

Some indication that Alex Chiasson is one of them, but I'm not sure.

EDIT: I am sure now. Chiasson, the stagnating Guptill and the grinder Nick Paul + a 2nd for Spezza and a prospect.

Great deal Dallas.

Lehtonen is going to be in the Vezina Trophy discussion this year when that W number spikes.

Per Bob McKenzie: DAL trades Alec Chiasson, Alex Guptill, Nicholas Paul and 2nd round pick in 2015 to OTT for Jason Spezza and Ludvig Karlsson. #TSN

Quantity for quality. Chiasson hit a wall this season, but he'll still be a good player. Can be a 2nd line winger in this league. Has to get confident again. Guptill is the same player coming out of Michigan as he was going in. Best player on the team, but was left home and scratched some weekends because of lack of effort and other things...Nick Paul is a two-way center that may become a weak third liner, he had a good season on a very defensive North Bay team this year, but I'm not sure the upside is all the way there. Heavy-footed, but great at faceoffs, good attention to detail.

Spezza is a nerd, but he's a skilled nerd. I'm positive one glare from Jamie Benn will fix that stupid laugh he has for good. That's an 80, 90-point second line center. For you fantasy players, draft Val Nichushkin and Brett Ritchie this year, you won't be sorry.

The Benn at center thing was stupid. Like when they thought about making Nash a center. Did they ever even actually try that or just talk about it?
