Seriously, when everyone and their mother is crying for a center.
But Purcell aint bad for Edm. He could be their David Perron this year. Fills a need, not unlike Neal for HornyQ.

@fearthefin: The young players Edmonton made room for by shipping out veterans are now the veterans they're shipping out to make room for young players.

Perfect word. But Purcell is useless.
I guess Gagner goes to wing. Because he's not beating out Stammer or Val for a job...

Now Sam Gagner has been traded to Arizona. Where he can probably resume being a center...

Gagner's jaw must have hit the floor when he heard this news.
Get it?? Cause of his jaw injury.
Ehhh, I'll see myself out.

The flip is Sam Gagner and B.J. Crombeen from Tampa to Arizona for a 6th round pick.
Not sure if Tampa is eating any of that. Unloading quite a bit of salary though, that's for true. July 1 is coming up too...hmm...

Re: Non-Penguins Offseason Moves 2014
That seems like some really horrid trading by Tampa...
In the end for Tampa basically takes a 6th round pick for the right to pay $1.6M/yr to Gagner and $4.05M in cap space and the need to fill two roster spots.

You gotta let the other shoe fall. But to think that opening up over $5 mil in cap space, not losing any impactful players and collecting three draft picks is considered "horrid" is really the sign of a tough crowd. But really, why evaluate the trade when the sequence is incomplete?

Re: Non-Penguins Offseason Moves 2014
Small note, it isn't over $5M, it is $4.05M. $4.5M (Purcell) + $1.15M (Crombeen) - $1.6M (retained Gagner).mikey287 wrote:You gotta let the other shoe fall. Plus, they need to fill the two roster spots, say $1M for the one roster spot. That leaves $3M to use to make a splash with. And, you are paying that $1.6M for two years, and that counts against your cap. All for $3M in space...

Re: Non-Penguins Offseason Moves 2014
They had $10 million to spend on 4 players before that trade. Add that $3 million and the $$$ saved from the Nate Thompson trade and now they're over $14 million for 4 players. Which they'll need to sign Stastny or trade for Spezza.
Although I agree Stevie Y could've got more for Gagner.

They traded away 2 and got back none, so they need to sign 2 more than they did before.ville5 wrote:They had $10 million to spend on 4 players before that trade. Re: Non-Penguins Offseason Moves 2014
The lightning have tons of young, productive, inexpensive players. They put themselves in outstanding shape with the moves yesterday. The "dead cap space" is a non issue due to the likely relative savings they'll have from guys like drouin namestnikov and the like over the next few years. I dont know how someone can look at that roster and cap space and think anything other than "theyre good now and can add something very significant". They made these moves after days of talking with pending UFAs, criticizing them now is at best premature.

That's why I used your $3 million figure and not $5 million figure used.Jim wrote:They traded away 2 and got back none, so they need to sign 2 more than they did before.ville5 wrote:They had $10 million to spend on 4 players before that trade. How does $10M + $3M = "over $14M"?ville5 wrote:That's why I used your $3 million figure and not $5 million figure used.Jim wrote:They traded away 2 and got back none, so they need to sign 2 more than they did before.ville5 wrote:They had $10 million to spend on 4 players before that trade. You are missing Nate Thompson in your math, no?Jim wrote:Small note, it isn't over $5M, it is $4.05M. $4.5M (Purcell) + $1.15M (Crombeen) - $1.6M (retained Gagner).mikey287 wrote:You gotta let the other shoe fall. Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 41s
MTL acquires P.A Parenteau from COL. I believe Daniel Briere is headed to COL in return.
