In regards to the "What have you done for me yesterday" point, wouldn't that have been the basis for a potential Mike Richards buyout, anyway?

His year this year was not up to par for his contract, no one is arguing against that, but much of the talk about buying him out has been centered around the fact he hasn't been "as good" as he should be (if not here, than elsewhere).

He's a declining asset, regardless of whether he plays better next year. They got their two cups with him on the team and the compliance buyout was an opportunity to shed themselves of a contract that could hurt them in a few years.

I don't have any problems with Richards; he's a decent 3 C, but it was an opportunity to move on and not spend that cap space well into the future.
If they can trade him, good for them.

It's a heavy deal. But only people who have the "what have you done for me yesterday" mindset think he's the worst player ever. He's had one bad season (this one) and you gotta think that Jeff Carter - who may have had his best season - will pull him by his boot straps...

Now, if Richards has another poor year in Los Angeles, well, then maybe you've shot yourself in the foot a bit...
Perhaps. With 6 more years, it might be difficult.

Indeed it is.

A fairly classic mikey287 comment, in which he argues against a point that no one has made.
Should be a challenge.

And relax, it wasn't a knock on you...it was just a general statement on how hockey fans are in general. Sorry...

Yeah, it was a knock on me. Or in our last discussion he was just projecting.

Either way, I don't get how someone couldn't see Richard's poor year as part of a declining trend.

Yea, Richards supposedly worked on his conditioning and foot speed this past summer. After specifically working on it and putting that kind of showing this year in both aspects? Woof. Not good.

It wasn't a knock on anyone in particular...Jesus...

Why would anyone step up to try to play a victim...?

The word "trend" indicates that he played poorly last season. Which, of course, wasn't the case.

If you're looking for the near-point-per-game player he was in Philadelphia, you're not going to find him. He's not the guy in LA. He's a piece, just like everyone else more or less. Let's not lose sight of the fact that only one player exceeded 50 points on that team this year. Just a lot different of a setup in the Campbell Conference, a lot different of a setup in Los Angeles, a lot different coach in Darryl Sutter. Again, poor year for Richards, he deserves criticism. But I don't believe he's finished.

Anyone know what the pick is and if CBJ is picking up any of Umberger's salary?

I didn't think they'd be able to trade Umberger. I don't understand this trade based on how it appears....

Edit: It's a 4th round pick in 2015 draft. No mention of salary. Both are 32 years old. Saves them $150k in salary...Hartnell was signed for 2 more years than Umberger....I'm still confused. Why would Flyers do this?

That seems like not a good move for the Flyers.

They probably forgot Columbus was in the division.

Its a fourth rounder

I literally can't think of a reason for Philly to make this trade

Saves them 2 years salary on the cap and maybe Hartnell was causing locker room issues???? That's the only guess I have. Umberger is untradeable. At least that's what I'd of thought before this happened.... unless they took on another bad cap hit or ate some of his contract. I don't get it at all. Weird.

Edit: Hartnell waived his no trade clause to let the trade go through....maybe he asked to be traded?

I dunno if he personally asked, but according to Aaron Portzline, Hartnell has been interested in Columbus since he was drafted.

It gets rid of the empty sweater that is RJ Umberger and adds someone who actually can play.
