Does someone want to argue that they don't belong in such a venue?
They aren't exactly my up of tea either, but I'd argue they in the grand scheme of things were much more important to music than Nirvana ever was. I have a blind hatred for Nirvana I admit it. I think they sucked(besides Grohl), and their impact on music other than causing other **** sound alike bands like them was next to nothing.
As a big classic rock fan, I tend to agree. While I'm not a fan of Nirvana, I don't have a blind hatred for them, but I'd agree that their "influence" didn't produce many good bands who have endured or stood the test of time. The same cannot be said of the Sex Pistols, or Aerosmith, or Queen, just to name a few. As a matter of fact, there is a striking similarity between Nirvana's signature song and "More Than a Feeling" by Boston. Many people think that Cobain stole the riff and the polyrhythms from that song:

I gotta say....Eddie Vedders 49th birthday is tomorrow. I feel very very old considering the youngest memeber is 47 and will be 48 in April. All of my fav bands are gwtting so old.

Mine too, and I'm only 35. For some reason, musicians seem to be making great music much later into their careers than in decades past. Neil Young's "Psychedelic Pill" was one of his better efforts IMO, at age 67. Tom Waits' "Bad as Me" was phenomenal, and ZZ Top released "La Futura" well into their 60's, which was perhaps their best album in three decades.

@GradyWSmith wrote:I was inspired to make this supercut after posting my 10 Best Country Albums of 2013 list for EW. A few commenters told me that my choices weren't mainstream enough, and I thought, "Well, yeah, because so much of what's on the radio these days sounds exactly the same!" So I decided to make a video to prove my point.

I hope country fans will stop settling for this derivative junk. I love a dumb party song every once in a while (including some of these!), but when they're the only flavor available, they get old very, very fast. Here's to better music in 2014.
You could probably do a similiar video with mainstream hiphop from 2001-present

Or mainstream pop, or what is now considered mainstream rock (Black Keys and bands of that hipster-ish ilk).

You could do a similar video with pretty much all mainstream music during that time period. There's only a few outliers here and there.

They are one of those bands that has more motivation than inspiration, which is largely what it takes to be "successful" in the music biz.

I'd also lump them in with the Arcade Fires, the Kings of Leons, and the Vampire Weekends of the world. Their music is basically interchangeable.

Yet, that is what's popular.

I may have posted it in a different thread, but Ritchie Blackmore said it best:

"To be (musically) successful, you have to be a good musician. To be popular, you just have to be fashionable."

This gentleman always had a theory that hip hop and country were way more similar than either cared to admit. What exactly is the difference between singing about your maybach vs your john deere? Getting drunk vs smoking dope?

So true.

I was driving through west texas recently listening to the radio thinking how grand it would be to have a country vs. rap battle / mashup.

I didn't know they even put out a new one. I'm listening to it for the first time right now. I'm always skeptical when an old band puts out a new record, especially after that horrible "new" album Van Halen released. This is actually quite good. I like how they mess around with silence in a lot of the songs. Chartreusse.. man, that song is good. I don't care for the lyrics. Their lyrics were never in my taste anyway. But the music is spot on. Great guitar, great voice, great everything.
