Nirvana, if for no other reason, should be celebrated for ridding us of hair metal of the '80's. In many ways, they were a culmination of what was happening in the "underground" music scene started by punk in the late '70's.

Re: Let's talk about music
Abandoned Luncheonette (1973) and Daryl Hall & John Oates (1975) are imo their 2 best albums and rank highly on my all time list. I always try and introduce these 2 albums to people when talking about H&O, because a lot of people hear Hall & Oats and automatically think of their poppy stuff from the 80s (which is awesome), but their early stuff is so good. Nice mix of folk and soul and those guys can jam.FreeCandy44 wrote:No love for Hall & Oates?

I like 70s Hall & Oates. Abandoned Luncheonette is probably my favorite, too.

Talk about unintended consequences........ Nirvana - indeed, grunge as a genre - has the lasting legacy of paving the way for many bands that followed. Like Creed. And Nickelback.Factorial wrote:Nirvana, if for no other reason, should be celebrated for ridding us of hair metal of the '80's. Re: Let's talk about music
woah...Nirvana has nothing to do with Nickelback and Creed. I'd blame Pearl Jam, Staind, Puddle of Mud etc for that garbage rock.

Not clumping Pearl Jam with Staind. Just stating that that stlyle of contemporary rock is more akin to those two.

That's like blaming Nietzsche for Hitler.

Re: Let's talk about music
It's a direct musical evolution from the grunge 'sound' (being generous) to the turgid, marble-mouthed, drop-D, chugga-chugga of Puddle of Mudd, Creed, Staind, Nickelback. All are the unwanted offspring of Seattle.
The only thing worse than grunge is post-grunge alt rock. And it is utterly disturbing to me that, genealogically speaking, Foo Fighters have to be lumped into a genre that Wikipedia says also includes Matchbox 20.

Re: Let's talk about music
That was an either or for me with Neutral Milk Hotel coming in March. Got tickets for that instead. I saw Mangum last winter and thought to myself, that was great, but wish it were the whole band...so, that was an easy choice.
Plus pixies minus kim deal...not the same

Re: Let's talk about music
My Pixies ticket was $65. Blech.
I thought the show was sold out. That was making me feel a little bit better. If there end up being a bunch of seats I'll be mad that I paid $65.

Blame the major record labels for that. Anyone that could ape that STP singer was signed to a record deal.tifosi77 wrote:It's a direct musical evolution from the grunge 'sound' (being generous) to the turgid, marble-mouthed, drop-D, chugga-chugga of Puddle of Mudd, Creed, Staind, Nickelback. I remember these guys from this song, which in addition to getting a fair amount of "alternative" play was noteworthy because this sicko was wearing a Pittsburgh Strikers shirt. The sentence for a string of child sex offenses -- including the attempted rape of a baby -- includes 29 years behind bars for the disgraced rock star, according to Britain's Press Association news agency. Six years are on license, meaning he will remain under police supervision.
Ian Watkins, 36, confessed to 13 offenses at Cardiff Crown Court in Wales last month. On Wednesday, Judge Roger John Royce said the case broke "new ground," according to Press Association.
"I am satisfied that you are a deeply corrupting influence, you are highly manipulative, you are a sexual predator, you are dangerous," Royce said. "The public and, in particular, young females need protection from you."
