I know its not really Penguin related but He was a fan favorite while here. He suffered a broken leg in the 3rd period of last nights pre season game against Buffalo.....

From the crappy replay, it looked like it happened after he tried to hogtie/throw the Sabre to the ice. Most unfortunate, and definitely NPR (Not Pens Related).

Re: Jordan Staal bad break(leg)
Looks like he did it to himself, unfortunately. Tried to body slam the guy that checked him, fell funny.
They need center depth now.
Martin+Sutter for Skinner.
Do it GMJR!

Can we force Sutter to change his last name to Staal and then Carolina is more likely to trade for him?

Doubtful. The Staal obsession was a Rutherford creation.MalkinIsMyHomeboy wrote:Can we force Sutter to change his last name to Staal and then Carolina is more likely to trade for him?

Well, if you buy into all those corsi stats. He's below average when it comes to possession.mikey287 wrote:Defense has no stats. Offense does.Beveridge wrote:Why do we want to trade Sutter?

Re: Jordan Staal bad break(leg)
That's typically what happens when you start something like 80% of your shifts in the defensive zone (because you're good at defense) and have cow dung for wingers.
But if you think Corsi is supposed to be a defensive stat, let's just stop there, because that's just flat out wrong. That's almost as bad as using +/-.

Re: Jordan Staal bad break(leg)
Why isn't there a possession +/- stat? When your team has clear possession or is fighting for the puck in the offensive zone, it increases, and decreases if the other team does that stuff.
Like if the fourth line goes out, loses the faceoff and gets buried in the defensive zone, their Poss+/- goes down to -:40 or whatever.
It could also be weighed with the Corsi. If you have a net :00 Poss+/-, but give up more shots than you take, it should decrease a certain amount.
Also using time for a stat is terrible I realize, so it should be converted into a %.

Re: Jordan Staal bad break(leg)
That's basically what Corsi is (it's shots for - shots against), but it's not a be all end all.
At any rate, it's not really worth getting into, because Hugo:Sutter::CG:Spaling.

Yeah I know, but its a bit one dimensional.MRandall25 wrote:That's basically what Corsi is (it's shots for - shots against), but it's not a be all end all.
Like in baseball, while it's somewhat arbitrary, WAR (wins above replacement) does a good job of considering more than just batting average or home runs. In hockey, the only big stats that are mentioned when mentioning a players worth is points, goals, +/-, TOI, hits, takeaways, Corsi, etc. They're all really just counting numbers in different categories.
I guess I'm just surprised it doesn't get terribly more complicated than that.
Edit: never mind

So, in order for Brandon Sutter to be considered better defensively, he would need to shoot more. Got it.Hugo Stiglitz wrote:Well, if you buy into all those corsi stats. I wouldn't consider that deal as moving Sutter... I would consider that deal bringing in Skinner.mikey287 wrote:Defense has no stats. Offense does.Beveridge wrote:Why do we want to trade Sutter?

My best to Jordan for a full recovery.
On the other nonsense, anything that tracks shots and ignores the quality of the scoring chance is worthless to me. I couldn't care less about how many crappy shots somebody generated.

I thought I read an article that pointed out how Sutter had poor possession numbers no matter where he started on the ice
and didn't play against quality competition. But I could be making that up.
I have never really been a fan of Sutter because I feel he has played good defensively by just being a center fielder in the neutral zone.
He barely gets an offensive zone push or cycle. He limits the other team from scoring by playing against average or below average competition
and not trying to do anything else.
in fairness (and this is probably for the expectations thread) that could have had a lot to do with having crap line mates and his role by
FHCDB. This tops my list of things I am really curious about for next season. His generating some basic pressure can go a long way
in making this a "different" team.

I love when people say "puck possession" in the context of these numbers.

Sutter has had squirt players as wingers.
