The Penguins last season IMO were a Grade A example of the failures of focusing on possession / Corsi. Lots of possession, lots of [low quality] shots, shutout.
Would love to hear what HCDB and J Martin have to say about this debate.

Must have thorough understanding of the game before you can process it properly. Trying to allow numbers to lead you past the "narrative" can and likely will create inconsistencies. Events occur on the ice and numbers can back them. Due to a lack of thorough understanding, some people in the numbers community (who do fine work, to their credit, it's just incomplete - largely through no fault of their own) chalk things up that they can't comprehend (or choose not to comprehend) to luck or "noise" or random chance...
A good deal of the information from the numbers community is useful, in fact, many things have been tracked for decades by coaches internally - nothing new under the sun. It just can't tell you everything about anything.
