According to Nick Kypreos:
@RealKyper Breaking #NHL news confirmed #Leafs Brian Burke done with the Leafs. Details to follow.
Hmmm, fired or quit?
McKenzie reporting it as well...saying he's been fired.

weird, I may be in the minority but I thought he was doing a pretty decent job turning them around, if he could have landed a goalie, look out

What? Kessel trade wasn't his fault. He did a pretty good job with what little he had. I don't see how you don't let him get through at least these next two offseasons...they were positioned to make some moves and he was the one that got them there.

fired
Paul Roper @Paul_Roper
Only the Leafs would fire their GM after nine months of not playing and nine days until the first game since said nine months. #NHL

Unless they plan to clean house, I don't see how this helps.

@DarrenDreger
Timing of Burke dismissal very odd. He and all brass were at Marlies game last night in Hamilton. Truth will surface. Something fishy.

Yeah, this is odd. My guess is that it is something to do with a proposed deal to get Luongo. The new owners want to make a big splash with a deal for Luongo, and Burke wouldn't pay the Canucks price (which is said to be steep).

Plus he's been outspoken against those cap-circumvention contracts, and likely didn't want to take a horrible one on.

The Bluejackets should ditch Howson for Burke right now.

He (Burke) has a lot of friends on the BoG. A lot of enemies, too...

Burke is a great character to have in this league, but I wouldn't want him as GM of my team. After 5 years of sucking, the Leafs future is still pretty questionable. Not much of a plan in place...

There’s no good time to do this, but once you get to a decision on something like this, it’s only fair to act upon it, fair for the fans and everyone involved. You can’t fake it, and the relationship between the ownership and the GM is a complex one, it has to work long term and if it will not, you deal with it expeditiously. With a week to go before the season, it made sense to deal with it now.”
Anselmi said Burke would stay in the organization as a senior adviser

This opens the door for Luongo though. Burke would have never taken that contract. Luongo may never take that trade though.

It was a few days ago, so I can't find it anymore, but I think the winning Tweet from a Leafs fan was along the lines of:
I wanted Burke fired, but it's the Leafs, so I still feel like they are screwing it up.
