I really don't consider post-Waters Pink Floyd to actually be Pink Floyd, and would have left Division Bell off my list if there was another Album worthy of being in the Top 10. AMLOR would be 11.

Mrs Tif is in New Orleans for work all week (I'll be joining her for the weekend, laissez les bon temps rouler!), and when she's gone I like to watch documentaries. Last night I was feeling musical, so I fired up a couple clips on YouTube that might be popular with some in this thread.

The first clip is only 10-12 minutes long, but the second one is a full 1-hour BBC program. The final few minutes of that second one actually had me laughing. Good stuff.

How did I possibly not know about Jojo Mayer until only somewhat recently? Has to be one of the most talented and innovative drummers alive.
Spoiler:

This one is super long obviously, but it delves into his philosophies a bit and is a good illustration of how innovative his approach has been towards bridging the gap between humans and drum machines when it comes to Drum & Bass types of music (and how great of a sound that can sound)

I spoilered the ones that would really only appeal to drummers the most. This one is just a fun little solo to watch. The groove he builds into is just awesome.

I was just going to come to this thread to ask if anyone knew of any really good, current, jazz drummers. I've been listening to Max Roach/Clifford Brown, Art Blakey, Roy Haynes...most of those guys have been gone a long time (Haynes is 90 soon). Jojo Mayer isn't a jazz drummer per se, but highly (!) skilled. Thanks for sharing.

Here's Art Blakey:

What I love about a jazz drum solo is that the kit is very minimalist. Bass, snare, a couple of toms, high hat, a couple of cymbals. Not a lot of extra elements that muddy the sound. Not that I don't mind something like YYZ or Neil Peart's solo on Tom Sawyer, but simple is pretty cool.

Yeah, I can't really name any great current jazz drummers off the top of my head. I don't doubt that there are any playing, but you just don't hear much about them (or, if we're being honest, any jazz musicians, at least not as much as one used to). If we're talking local PGH though, Roger Humphries is pretty highly regarded in the jazz community, and I'm pretty sure he's still gigging fairly regularly (I had the good fortune of taking lessons from him for a couple years too). Yeah, guys like Mac Roach and Art Blakey were so influential in how the drum kit could be used to not just more-or-less keep time, but really compliment and add to the music, it's almost like a "where can you go from there?" type of situation. Funnily enough, Jojo Mayer actually started out primarily in jazz, but since then has become basically a jack-of-all-trades drummer, and his somewhat recent shift into exploring Drum & Bass beats on a live kit is what's gained him the most notoriety (he can do this stuff in part because of his great jazz chops).

I get what you're saying about the kit though. When I started out with primarily rock/funk stuff, I had two rack toms to go along with the floor tom. Then once I started playing jazz through high school and college, we only used one rack tom and one floor tom, and since then I've just kept with that set-up no matter what genre I'm playing, since I much prefer it. That extra tom up top just muddles everything up :P

Don't get me wrong, I love Neil Peart. I love how he re-learned his technique - changed his grip - mid career to challenge himself. But that setup is unreal lol.

The thing about Rush is that all three of them should be in consideration for the "nicest guy in rock" award.

I'm totally okay with that, because I know Peart can make use of the kit in a musical sense. It's not just showy.

I found this to be a amusing: a friend of mine sold a Kramer guitar on eBay to Dave Spitz (Black Sabbath, Great White and White Lion).

There's actually a bit of method to the madness re: Bozzio's kit. All the toms are tuned in such a way (and cymbals picked out and modded to specific pitches) that it allows him to basically play melodies on the drum kit, which is quite the unique feature.

As a drummer, I have to roll my eyes when I see a 10k piece drum kit. Its always been my opinion that less is more and a drummer can make his point/groove with a simple 5-6 piece as opposed to a ego kit. For example, Matt Cameron of Soundgarden/PJ fame is simplistic in his approach, but if youve heard any Soundgarden or PJ after 1999 you know whats up.
