Debrusk is 27 and needs a new contract…I’d just as soon resign Jake.
Exactly. This move would be a head-scratcher for sure. Unless you were just flipping him at the deadline also. But then, why would you not just maximize the Jake value?
DeBrusk can probably be signed for 5.5 to 6 million. Jake would take probably 9 million per year. Jake is a warrior but is small, how many more years of pounding can his body take. There are a couple of reasons.
I'd only like this deal if there was a top prospect coming to us along with DeBrusk. The money shouldn't be the issue, it should be the age. Getting a 27 year old player instead of a 29 year old player. Dubas needs to be aiming for 24 and younger. I like DeBrusk and I wouldn't mind him as the roster player coming to us, but without a top prospect also coming to us...YIKES!
If this is the deal, all 3 straight up, Dubas failed badly. Look at the stats. If it is these 3 players traded 1 for 1 for each other, the Penguins get the 3rd best player in the deal for the best player in the deal.

I figure there would be something else coming to Pittsburgh—maybe one of Vancouver's prospects (Podkolzin?) and DeBrusk. If they could resign DeBrusk, you'd have a wing for either Malkin or Crosby who would take Guentzel's place on the roster, and a younger player who could hopefully make the team next season. I don't necessarily buy this rumor, but I can understand the thinking—you're still getting younger, augmenting org depth and the skill drop off wouldn't be huge.

It only works if a stud prospect or two is coming back to Pittsburgh with DeBrusk.

DeBrusk is a UFA this summer. If you want him, just sign him this summer. Without giving up any assets.
It makes no sense at all for this to be the deal.
If he's involved he's not the main piece, but would be added to off-set salary for cap purposes. The main parts would be the prospects from Boston and Vegas. Who knows anymore! lol

Colorado has been busy. 1st for Sean Walker? Bowen Byram went from 4th overall 4 years ago to getting Casey Middlestadt? He must have been quite a disappointment but even still, weird trades for the Avs.
Vegas reportedly washing Hanifin through another team, so they'll only be paying 25% of Hanifin contract (under 2M). They still have plenty of space left to add another forward.
I also saw a mention from an analytics guy that wrote a paper in the beginning of the year talking about how teams with bigger defenseman (not necessarily slow slugs) typically have better playoff success. After Hanifin acquired, Vegas defense:

Would be a great haul. Debrusk if he plays well with Sid and is resigned for 5.5-6M as a Jake replacement and two prospects and a pick for a pure rental, not resigning here is an A+
Rust isn’t moving. DeBrusk would be Jake’s replacement. I like this strategy if we feel good he can be resigned for 5-6M. And we get a 1st and a prospect back
There is so much attention and rumors on a possible Jake trade, any of you with your Social accounts hearing any other rumors on other Penguins players?

Thanks,
Haven't heard a peep about players like Smith, Ruhwedel, Nedeljkovic, Eller, or Acciari. Only other person's name brought up was Rust, who media said several teams were interested in but Dubas wouldn't ask him to waive NMC. Detroit reportedly main team of interest.
Speaking to my friend in Vancouver, he thinks the team will hold firm and will not move Hoglander, Lekkerimaki, or Willander in a deal. Podkolzin and Raty would be the best offered from Vancouver, in his opinion. Zucker, Greenway, and Duhaime would be their Plan B targets.
The only reason to do a three way is to help out two other teams work out the cap issues to get the players they want. We could retain salary on Jake to make a trade with the Nucks work for Lindholm and then move Lindholm for DeBrusk but we should be getting a good deal of compensation from both teams to make this all work. We have the best player by far in the deals and we should be rewarded for that.
