Haven't heard any salary retention on EK65?

I’m in an area of very limited connectivity, so further updates in this thread would be appreciated, at the very least by me.

SJ retains 1.5 of EK salary. Pens retain 25% of Petry's

This is a steal by Dubas. My only slight concern is that even with this trade, we are still 79K over the cap with 12F, 7D, 2G. This likely means Ruhwedel gets waived in camp to get compliant.

The 2nd concern is our bottom pairing defense. For as much as some didn't like Rutta, I think he was better than Ruhwedel. Is Pittsburgh going to say F-it and just go with POJ-Smith as their 3rd pairing?

Happy we got him now there is another problem:

We are $79K over cap and only have 21/23 roster players signed.

Something else coming?

Also, reporter for Montreal says Pitlick wanted a fresh start somewhere else and Montreal was happy to move on from Hoffman without salary retention.

Finally, same reporter says Montreal is looking to see if they can flip Petry before the season, and if they can't they will likely try again at the trade deadline.

What they gave up for Karlsson is pretty minimal. As you mention there's no flexibility adding to the roster unless someone else ends up on LTIR.

Jesse Marshall
@jmarshfof
In one trade, Kyle Dubas jettisoned all of Pittsburghs fat, a first and second round pick, and got back last years Norris Trophy winner and one of the best offensive defensemen in the modern era of hockey. That’s wild.

I like it, only salary retention on contract is small, only 500k more and we would be cap compliant. Really Only 1.5M retained by SJ!?
They should be retaining at least 2M or 3M!?

But we got rid of Granlund, Petry, but also Rutta. Third D pairing could be an issue with POJ, Smith, Ruhwedel and Friedman.
I like we traded Legare instead of Poulin, if one young F had to go.

Now what, we are still over the cap..

You need a RHD who can penalty kill. I'm hoping they do better than Ruhwedel

I'm guessing right now it's

Graves Letang
Pettersson Karlsson
POJ/ Smith Ruhwedel

That's 79K over with Guentzel assumed on LTIR?
79K over before Guentzel goes on LTIR. You have to be cap compliant before using LTIR.

Talk about a sheltered 3rd pair. That’s a good problem to have.

OUT:
Granlund, Petry, Rutta, DeSmith, Légaré, 1st (2024), 2nd (2025)

IN:
Karlsson (@10M), Pitlick, Hamaliuk, SJ 3rd (2026), 1.56M retention (Petry)

Looks like a pretty good deal!

LIKE:
- I love that we moved on from both Petry and Granlund in the deal.
- If Ruhwedel is sent down, we're cap compliant. I don't care if he gets claimed. Guentzel's LTIR gives 6M of relief so Pens can activate some folks to flesh out the roster.
- We didn't give up two first rounders.
- Got a cheap forward back in the deal that won't be a burden on cap.
- 1.5Mx2 retention is better than the 0.83x1 & 1.83x3 for a Granlund buyout.
- Suddenly there's room at the inn for Ty Smith and maybe some of the guys in WBS.
- Our top 4D: Letang, Karlsson, Pettersson, Graves. That's nice.

DON'T LIKE:
- 10M cap hit is still an albatross. Gotta think EK will serve out his contract here.
- Pitlick and Hamaliuk do nothing for me. Maybe there's something to salvage or gain, but I'm not seeing it.
- Montreal won this trade.

Pure awesomeness.

Evidence that patience is indeed a virtue.

Great work Dubas!

Paraphrasing Mark Madden, this is about half a step away from “all of our bad players for all of their good players.”

A 3rd-pairing of POJ and Smith should not be that big of a problem, since 1 and 2 will play like 58min a game!

Dillon Hamaliuk is pretty much a throw in. We sent out Legare, who had done nothing. Neither has Hamaliuk, a 2nd round pick in 2019 who spent all of last season in the ECHL.

Rem Pitlick is a useful bottom 6er. He's also not over 30, only 26. I don't know how much actual center he has played at the NHL level, but he is listed as being able to play all 3 forward positions, so that gives us some flexibility. 21 goals, 54 points in 123 NHL games.

According to Bob Grove, this is the largest trade in Penguins history, with 12 total assets involved. The Kessel trade with 9 assets involved was the previous leader, and then three 8 asset trades.

Where are all the morons criticizing Dubas for not doing anything on Day 3 of Free Agency? Freaking out that he’s overrated and terrible and was missing out on players etc.

Hilarious.
