I know this is classic "college know-it-all hippie"esque but after I took a history of Jazz class I gained a gigantic appreciation for all things jazz.

Of course, much like Radiohead, whenever I play some and someoe else is in the room they're like "why the **** are you playing this" so I guess I understand a lot of people aren't fans.

But still, I think learning about jazz would really help people enjoy it more

I earned my dislike of jazz after attending a week long jazz camp (#nerd).

I think I know what MIMH is referring to... early on musicians experiment and focus more on technique so they sound more exciting. Later on, they kinda mellow out a bit. I'll agree with that. But overall skill/technique only gets better.

To me, it strongly depends on the type of jazz. From my admittedly limited understanding, there are forms of jazz that adhere more closely to its origins as music you can dance to, and there are types of jazz that are intended to me music that you listen to, but can't dance to, like bebop. Compare the video posted by Willie Kool (more danceable music) with the one posted by Sarcastic (definitely not). I find that I like jazz in the former tradition, but like it less and less as it moves toward the latter tradition. For example, I can appreciate that John Coltrane (who is more in the bebop lineage) was a great musician, but I don't care for his music at all.

lol... I wasn't serious with that tune. That's Free Jazz. It's one big mess. Probably the worst kind of music there is. I like to drive my mom crazy in the car when I'm driving her somewhere.

Exactly as you said, different types of Jazz. I don't like modern Jazz. Very boring, almost elevator music. Jazz I like is exciting with a lot of soloing. Jazz is musicians' music. Largely improvisational, which can be exciting and scary all at once. You have to think right on your feet which isn't always so easy, like when you're just not motivated or inspired for some reason.

I got to appreciate Jazz in college. I had a music class, where the teacher basically sat us down 95% of the time, and had us listen to Jazz and Classical pieces.

But for the most part, I can understand how majority of people just won't like it.

Honestly it was the pompous attitude of the jazz musicians (both instructors and students) that turned me off from it. Such arrogant feminine hygiene products. Yes, I am judging and entire genre on one week of camp in Montgomery County, MD. As I said its rather irrational.

Did you do that thing where you put the rubber end of the plunger over the end of the trumpet? So cool.
