it's also worth noting that, because of the app i have to use, i need to enter a password to check e-mail on my phone. so with every buzz comes me unlocking my phone, tapping the app, entering my PW, hitting enter and waiting a few secs for the message to load.

it's not like i can just make the message appear on the lock screen like my texts do.

I actually love running my own business, even with the headaches and added stress. I don't think I'd do very good in an office setting so unless I went into something else where I could freelance, I'd be pretty miserable.

Completely agree. The freedom is incredible if the business is doing well. And the responsibility never feels smothering but rather motivating

I remember either W or Obama being taken to task because one of his secret service guys carried hand sanitizer for him after shaking hands with groups of people, like that meant they weren't good enough for him.

Along the germs vein, there is a woman I work with that does NOT EVER wash her hands after she uses the bathroom. EVER. And she's not shy about it. She clearly feels "pressure" though - as she will literally turn on the water, run her hands through it for a millisecond, and turn the water off. WHY BOTHER? So disgusting.

I'm not sure how I'd label this pet peeve. But it's a product of working in an office with no formal dress requirements. Most of us here just wear whatever: jeans, loafers, sneakers and whatever. Older stuffed shirt types still wear formal wear, but mostly it's casual unless your doing something that would prompt formal wear.

I think it's obnoxious that managers don't wear formal wear when they interview people. I'm sure a manager could inform the applicant that the code is casual, so there's no need to get done up. But the applicant is going to dress up. So I would say that letting the applicant dress down is not an option, so the interviewing managers should at least wear business casual. It's disheveling to see full suited people being interviewed by people in jeans and sneakers.

Yeah I would be rather uncomfortable in a suit and tie while being interviewed by a dude in t-shirt and jeans.

I was in a suit while being interviewed by a dude in a t-shirt. It was a Red Sox t-shirt so at least we could chat about that.

I showed up in a suit for an interview for a seasonal summer job. Still friends with those people today and it's a story that still comes up when we get together. Total overkill.

If I were in a position here to interview candidates, I would explain the atmosphere and basically stress that they should wear whatever they feel most comfortable in. The building has no dress expectations, so dressing up is truly not necessary.

there's a different standard for candidates. they should be judged for not dressing formally enough, even if the manager is wearing a Hawaiian shirt and flip flops.
