No love for Teemu?

Post by Sigwolf »

I was very surprised to come here tonight and see no mention of the Teemu Selanne retirement ceremony. Selanne is probably the number two player I admired in my life behind Lemieux. He and I were born the same year, and his retirement marked the end of an era for me personally in my enjoyment of professional hockey. My wife and I named our first dog after him in only his second year as an NHL player. When we lost her after almost 15 years we thought his career would also soon almost be over, but he went on to play four more seasons. He was an inspiration as a player and as a person, and he will be missed in the NHL.

Eh, his actual retirement is more important than his ceremony

I'm a huge fan of Teemu too. I had his poster in my bedroom for 10+ years, but a ceremony is only "meh"

After his Hall of Fame induction however...

That ceremony was far from 'meh'. It exemplified what a class player, and human being, he was. The biggest surprise for me was the absence of Kariya.

I enjoyed it so much! My favorite part was seeing the how the WPG and ANA players honored him with throwback Selänne jerseys. The turnout of former teammates from Finland and the NHL was impressive, also.

Just really well done. The only thing missing was the umlaut on the A in his name. Lame, Anaheim.

I'll miss him.

His stated excuse is that he was on a previously planned ski trip with his family, but the whole truth seems to be that he remains fed up with the NHL due to their disregard and lack of supplemental discipline related to the head shots that ended his career.

In one sense, I understand. But on the other -- DUDE! This is your best buddy from your playing days. You scored in bunches in Anaheim! You two went to Colorado on the cheap together! Then ....well, that sucks!

I think you guys are putting more into Kariya not being there than Selanne is.

For sure. Selanne didn't mind at all. Said his goal was to get Kariya to love hockey again.

I'm still salivating over Kariya, Forsberg and Teemu on the same team.

I thought I was going to read comments regarding Teemu Selanne, but all i'm reading in this thread is cliquebait.

Now there's an all star team that never came to be. The 03/04 Avs.

Kariya - Sakic - Selanne
Hejduk - Forsberg - Tanguay

Now that's a top six.

On D they had Blake, Foote and Liles making out the top three.

It was during Selanne's dark years however, while he struggled before doing knee surgery. Kariya wasn't fit either. Forsberg only played 39 games (had 55 points in those, absolutely dominating p/g that season), and so on.

Kariya, as I recall, broke his wrist, came back, played one game and broke his wrist again that year...or something along those lines...but yeah, hard to believe that team wasn't able to pull it all together...it'd be as if we had Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Iginla........ah, nevermind...
