Stuff like Cash For Clunkers really annoyed me as well. Take a perfectly good car off the road and destroy it and replace it with a new car "became MPGs!" and to stimulate the economy. It's ultimately worse for the environment to support the making of new cars rather than using the existing ones.
I'm not anti-electric car, I think once it's all sorted it'll solve a lot of different problems. The effects would be multiplied greatly if nuclear power were used to make the electricity though. Please, put one in my back yard, I'd love to have it.

The fundamental problem of the electrification of the mobile sector (I forget which auto executive used that phrase) is the reliance on batteries. Every time Top Gear does a segment on electric/hybrid cars, this is the key concept that they keep hammering home. And it's true. Batteries suck. They're terrible. If there were a way to deliver an electric charge to a car while it was trundling along the road, that problem wouldn't be a thing anymore. But until someone can come up with a better way to store/deliver electricity to a car, the electric car will be little more than a fancy widget.
And I say that as someone who believes the electric car is the future of the car industry and who desperately wishes they could afford a Tesla Model S.
I want as many people to have an electric car as possible so there will be more and less expensive gas for me. If I lived in an urban area in the right climate I'd consider a full electric for my daily driver.
I loved our prius not for the lighter carbon footprint but for the 48mpg we were getting. We have a Yaris now (God I hate that car....) but it still gets almost 40mpg.
So this is how Toyota supposedly came up with the name "Yaris":

This is not a joke. When I got into the car last night (passenger side) the visor was down. I usually drive but I wasn't feeling well so I let the old lady drive home. I scrunched up as normal to pop inside the car and my head got wedged between the visor and the windshield and I got stuck. My abs started to cramp because of the awkward position and the only thing I could do was rip the visor out to free myself.
I always thought that it was a nod to the book and there was some story of a gunshot wound from his NY police days that he didn't want to talk about. Thanks for killing the dream man...
Personally I think the broken heart line is the highlight of the scene. Dreyfuss' laugh is great.

Wow, I have no recollection of that from the book at all. Of course, I think the book suck-out-loud awful, so I'm probably a little hazy on the deets.
The best scene from the movie - one of the best scenes from the entire decade of the 1970s - is Quint telling the USS Indianapolis story. The background of how they filmed that is fascinating.
