Super group usually has a specific meaning and I was always puzzled as to how that applied to them.
Yes, but they were also on one of those lame dozen-click lists of "One Hit Wonders" which is equally untrue.

Reminds me of a joke from, I think, Larry the Cable Guy: "Celebrities always die three at a time. For example ... Marlon Brando."blackjack68 wrote:So is it Robin Williams, Jimi Jamison and Joan Rivers or were they too spread out?
As for Joan Rivers, I've always been a huge fan, though I can't really explain why.
A couple of years ago, PFIDC and I were knocking around ideas for a Warz game based on Spaceballs. It never went anywhere, but I was insistent that there be multiple Joan Rivers jokes in the narrative. So much great material. So much classic stuff.
I was so sad to hear of her death. RIP.

I wish people would appreciate my Ottawa Sun joke more. It will be a classic and much talked about after I die one day.

Didn't think you actually needed to hear it, but keep up the good work, bud.

I feel for ya, nan. I made a joke about 'fappybrown' in JTOR this morning that I felt deserved some recognition.

Re: RIP Thread
I was teaching a class today and just before it started my students almost simultaneously announced that Joan Rivers had died, after having seen it on their phones. These are folks 19-21 years old and they not only knew who she was but they were upset about it. How many 81-year-old-comedians have that effect on teenagers?
So I told a couple of her jokes ...

You folks are kind, thank you.
Rivers was the queen of the short zinger.
- You don't need big boobs to be feminine. Look at Liberace.
- Elizabeth Taylor’s so fat, she puts mayonnaise on her aspirins.
- My mother hated me. She kept telling me she wished I was more like my cousin Sheila. Cousin Sheila died at birth.
- All babies look like Renée Zellweger pushed against a glass window.
- I've had so much plastic surgery, when I die they will donate my body to Tupperware.

(I wonder if she will.)
I often gave Rivers a pass or a pass with caution even when she crossed any line I have. I always sensed more "crazy aunt with no filter" than "mean-spirited witch." Just me, though.

Oh, I agree. Definitely got more of a no filter vibe. That was, imo, how she was able to find success as a female comic in the 1960s. There was something about her (I'd say her self-deprecation) where she could get away with saying some outlandish stuff without any real blowback. It was also, imo, the key to her being such a hit on Carson..... to even being invited on Carson in the first place. And that's what made her.

Re: RIP Thread
Yeah, Carson loved her. I've often wondered what if Rivers hadn't gone to Fox when her NBC contract was up or Carson had been more forgiving (he never spoke to her again). Then maybe she would've taken over "Tonight" instead of Leno. I thought she was great as the fill-in host because she was so different from Carson; the audience certainly got used to her and seemed to enjoy switching back and forth for awhile--kept things fresh, I think. Once Carson left the show to Leno, I was all Team Letterman.tifosi77 wrote:Oh, I agree. Definitely got more of a no filter vibe. Of all the comediennes I've enjoyed from the time I was young, Carol Burnett is the biggest one who remains.

Her short spot on Louie last year was great.

Also, in before the dumb "Louie curse" dreck that will be on Facebook tomorrow when the small minded find out Rivers and Williams were both on. Guess Seinfeld and Maron are next.
