For almost forty years, he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy. But while some of the brightest of celestial bodies are actually extinct, their molten energy long since cooled, miraculously, because they float in the heavens so far away from us now, their beautiful light will shine on us forever. And the glow will be so bright, it will warm your heart and make your eyes glisten, and you’ll think to yourselves, "Robin Williams -- what a concept."

Re: RIP Thread
The 'In Memoriam' segment at the Emmy's last night. When the montage reel/soulful singing ended, Billy Crystal provided a very earnest tribute to Robin Williams. There was one point where it sounded like he was about to cry ("It's very difficult to talk about him in the past"), but he held it together.

I saw some internet rumblings about billy crystal lifting that "what a concept" line from tim & eric because they made fun of him in an episode entitled "universe: what a concept" or something to that extent.

Re: RIP Thread
People are complaining that the RW Emmy tribute was "racist" because it showed the clip of Robin Williams using the lady's scarf as a hijab and saying "I'm from Iran. Help!" during one of his old acts.
1) Seriously, go punch yourself in the face.
2) Islam is not a race.
3) Seriously, go punch yourself in the face.
Agree with tif that the Crystal tribute was very touching.

Wonder if Tim and Eric lifted it from Robin's 1979 Grammy-winning album.canaan wrote:I saw some internet rumblings about billy crystal lifting that "what a concept" line from tim & eric because they made fun of him in an episode entitled "universe: what a concept" or something to that extent.

Re: RIP Thread
Most ppl don't know the difference between "race" or "culture" either. RW was making fun of the culture. Still inappropriate. Admittedly sometimes being inappropriate is funny.shafnutz05 wrote:People are complaining that the RW Emmy tribute was "racist" because it showed the clip of Robin Williams using the lady's scarf as a hijab and saying "I'm from Iran. P.S. He did not sing "Eye of the Tiger". The band booted that guy.

TIL that Survivor had two different lead singers. I always thought they kept the same one through their peak years.blackjack68 wrote:P.S. He did not sing "Eye of the Tiger". The band booted that guy.

Apparently, Eye of the Tiger singer was a major jag, so the band cut him. And then had 3-4 more solid hits.

Re: RIP Thread
There was an 80s compilation at some point and the TV commercial billed them as "super group Survivor."
Super group usually has a specific meaning and I was always puzzled as to how that applied to them.

I thought he had throat problems (polyps, maybe?) and had to take a year+ off to recuperate and the band replaced him.blackjack68 wrote:Apparently, Eye of the Tiger singer was a major jag, so the band cut him. And then had 3-4 more solid hits.

Re: RIP Thread
Reading a bit more, it looks like he was with the band for 3 stints. The first departure was for "vocal fold edema" and the second, he was fired for "creative differences" with one of the original members.Hockeynut! wrote:I thought he had throat problems (polyps, maybe?) and had to take a year+ off to recuperate and the band replaced him.blackjack68 wrote:Apparently, Eye of the Tiger singer was a major jag, so the band cut him. Looks at the confusing chart at the bottom of their Wiki page.

Eye Of The Tiger jag was also the singer for the "Real Men Of Genius" commercials that Budweiser ran in the early 2000sblackjack68 wrote:Reading a bit more, it looks like he was with the band for 3 stints.
