RIP to Dick Smith.......... that name may not sound familiar to you, but I can almost guarantee that most of you are familiar with his work without even knowing it.

He was a makeup effects pioneer, who was among the first to use several smaller latex appliances for face pieces in lieu of cumbersome - and not very realistic - full face masks. This allowed actor's performances to better come through the makeup. Won an Oscar for Amadeus, and an honorary Oscar two years ago that was presented by JJ Abrams.

James Brady, former press secretary to Ronald Reagan. Wounded in the assassination attempt on Reagan, he became a gun control advocate and the inspiration for the Brady Bill. He was 73.

I appreciate Mr. Brady's service to his country, which included a massive sacrifice, and he didn’t deserve what happened to him. But he spent the remainder of his life serving the profoundly illiberal goal of disarming the innocent and law-abiding. He no doubt meant well, but as the saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. RIP.

I said goodbye to my dad this morning. In some ways it was easier and in some harder than I would have imagined. The tremendous number of people who came to see him was very touching.

Saddened to hear that Marilyn Burns has died. The name might not be familiar but Marilyn played the heroine in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and starred in productions like Helter Skelter and Eaten Alive. I was lucky enough to meet her twice and she was an extremely classy, kind woman.

I appreciate the nice words.

he wasn't a big sports fan but he enjoyed going to penguin games with me. the first one he took me to was January 1992 in an exhibition match against team usa.

I didn't call my parents maybe I much as I should have but I did call the night before he passed and had a nice long talk with him. so that's really put me at ease.

Sorry for your loss Pitt.

Mrs. PghSkins' uncle/godfather passed away on Monday. He was 81 and had heart problems- was out sealing his driveway and keeled, neighbors couldn't revive him and was dead by the time EMS arrived.

I can only imagine how hard it's going to be admitting I'm flat out too old to do whatever, but.... I hope I hire a contractor to do this kind of work when I'm that age. Once it's no longer too soon, we'll be reminding my 75 year old father in law that he needs to call us to help him out at the house more often.

The only real regret I have in my life is that I got into an argument (over something petty, I'm sure) with my grandmother the night before she died. (She passed in her sleep.) So that was my last interaction with her.
