Re: Dispersal Draft Game - Discussion Thread
I am stunned that Varlamov dropped so far. IMO he's the only other goalie close to Lunqvisdt, Price, Rask, Quick. Rinne is not far off, but every one else is miles away...
Great pickup.
Great pickup.

Re: Dispersal Draft Game - Discussion Thread
That was one of the three I had mentioned as well and I was licking my chops for him. Should have picked him way sooner, but I don't value goaltending all that much (sans the elites and the scum...but there's a vast middle ground)...Varlamov was the league's best goaltender last season in my opinion...to get him here is larceny...

I don't think tier 2 goalies are so much worse than tier 1. Though hopefully I don't wait too long and get stuck with garbage

Re: Dispersal Draft Game - Discussion Thread
I made goaltending a non-priority...once the best 3 or 5 are gone I can't possibly get stuck with anyone too poor, it's a 12-team league...goalies 6-12 are pretty much swappable...if I came away with Varly, I'd consider myself as having plus goaltending...

Re: Dispersal Draft Game - Discussion Thread
I was juggling Varly and Bishop. In my mind they are equal for all intents and purposes, so I went with the one that is the English form of my last name

JS, cool image. One correction, if I may, Buff can't be a '90 birthday. Possibly an '85 birthday given his draft year?

I almost picked another goalie who sees 55+ games and was surprised to see that Varly was still out there.

I think I was looking at Pietrangelo's stats since he was the last one I added before Byfuglien.
Thanks for the heads up.

Re: Dispersal Draft Game - Discussion Thread
I might be stretching it with that actually...I've seen him play all three forward positions at some points, but considering how many Rangers games I've watched in the years from 2005-2013 (I lived in NY metro), I think I am little too finely tuned...it was probably like Joe Micheletti going, "Pard'me, Sam...looks like Callahan is playing center on this shift..." and it might have stuck in my head for some reason...definitely a right winger first...very sparingly a left wing and center, in that order even probably...
EDIT: Leafs won't miss the fact that he's really not a center...it'd be like calling Craig Adams a center more or less, it's happened, technically, but it's not real...just mental noise on my part...good call...fixed.

I almost took Callahan last round but figured he'd be available now. Hate you.

Stoked to get one of the 10 most relied upon dmen in the league with a 11th round pick.

Re: Dispersal Draft Game - Discussion Thread
Sorry about slowness, again... had the lovely blue screen of death again tonight when I was about to start working on something; stayed up until now making sure everything was okay.
Quick review of the picks... Callahan & Berglund are great value at this point. Both're tenacious & quality players. Berglund had a bit of a down year last year, but only because a couple other people emerged for St. Louis. Callahan, meanwhile, is pretty much a perfect 2nd or 3rd-line RW. Good at defense, physical player. I think in a few years he'll break down, but not this year.
Markov is interesting. He is a great offensive defenseman. However, he is a pretty poor defender. If protected, he'll do great as a power play quarterback & a passer from the back. But like in the Olympics, he can be exposed pretty easily at times.
Varlamov's a solid goaltender, but like Mikey & a few others have said, I think there's another 4-5 goaltenders in his class that're quality & definitely good enough for this league. But I do think Varlamov's the top of that group.
And finally, my pick. Was bouncing around 5 different players; however, I decided to bring Staal back into a 3rd-line center role, where he excelled most in his career thus far. The massive pressure of being one of the leaders of the team, like in Carolina, won't be here; instead, he can go back to being the rugged 3rd liner. He's got the size and physicality (did you know he had 194hits last season? That seems weirdly inflated), plus enough skill. A very good faceoff man as well, to help my push for possession. He was also the only one I was considering that I felt would go in the next 11 picks as people started to snatch up their 2nd/3rd line centers. Finally, he has played wing as well, so he can be versatile when necessary. Will not be asking him to follow behind his older brother in this team; will just ask him to use the body & shut down opposing players.
Also, moar centers. And moar Staals.

Re: Dispersal Draft Game - Discussion Thread
One of the better two way forwards and a pretty talented scorer. I know he's fallen out of favor a bit in the past couple years, but he's an ideal 3rd line center in my mind.meow wrote:Kinda surprised Mike Richards went at all.

I would agree. I imagined Mike Richards would be a third line center in this league.

I thought his sharp decline the last two seasons would scare people off. Not a bad pick at all. He gives it his all.

Re: Dispersal Draft Game - Discussion Thread
Thought he was a fringe third/fourth line center at this level without putting a ton of thought into it though...
Val Filppula is a good selection here I believe.
