He isn't exactly an unknown and was probably the best available dman at this point.

Haha he was the number one defenseman left on my board and defense looks to be the most shallow position so I figured I better scoop him up. I also like the idea of having a couple lightning quick #1 PMD to get the puck to Malkin or to let Karlsson freewheel up the ice himself.

I didn't think people thought that highly of him. As his biggest fan, I don't think he's the best d-man available right now...he's up there though...

I think I made the wrong choice. Oh well, I'll roll with it.
Nah the LA Kings are fine with that pick... Much like the real LA Kings yours is turning into a super gritty team that will absolutely punish physically anyone that plays them.

He was my next pick. I think he's forming into a nice d-man. However, this game is about picking guys you think would mesh together. Herb Brooks didn't have the best team at the 80 olympics, he had the right team.

I know he's not very popular here, but Nicklas Backstrom should very well have been in that "surprised he's still on the board" list...he is a superb playmaker with excellent vision and poise and he's at least capable defensively. Top-3 in the NHL in assists in 4 of his last 5 full seasons, including the last two years. He's a very underrated player.

Yea he's good to have on the power play, I figured he would be a good #1 center. I had him in mind and was happy to see him still available. Sorry I didn't elaborate on my pick until now. I made that post on my cell phone while walking out of work. lol

No comments on my Thornton pick so I figure people think it's a not bad but not great pick. Big fan of his size, leadership and experience.

EDIT: keep spelling his name "Thorton"...

Backstrom was on my "too good to not draft but don't like his game" list. Glad someone else picked him.
Spoiler:
Same with Thornton.

And once again...

Duchene & Landeskog were the two I was actually debating between before Chara kept falling. Landeskog is going to be very, very good this year.

I thought he should have gone sooner. His game has evolved a lot the last half decade or so and I'd much rather have 2014 80 point Joe Thornton than 2008 or whatever year 110 point Joe Thornton.

Yeah, I think it was a fine pick. I think he went a little low, but he just had a bomb dropped on his resume too...a playoff resume that was ripe with mines...he's got a pretty big matzah ball hanging out there...I know it's a team game and all, but that really hurt him...

Terrific player though.

I was very nervous someone was gonna scoop up Vlasic, I've had him pegged as Karlsson's partner since I took him.

Took who I thought the best right handed Dman to top off my top pairing. Love what I get from Girardi in terms of physicality and defensive awareness.

Was thinking about Nisky but Girardi has been better longer.

Niskanen* would be quite a reach at this point, imo. To put it mildly.

*No, I'm not confusing him with somebody else.

Man, basically every single person I was considering has been taken.

One sec, will make a pick shortly. Deciding between 3 players.

Making that pick off the hope that my other 2 will still be available later.

Picked Johnson partially because I think he would do amazingly well with Chara, who'd be a sort of mentor. Last year, he really started to pick up his play with the Avalanche, showing more of that potential that made him a #1 draft pick. 6'4", 230 pounds. 130 hits/blocked shots. 30 assists. Right-handed (Chara is left). Very mobile for his size, too, I think, allowing Chara to expend less energy during the year.

However, he is the first pick that I made more on the potential he would bring to my team, versus the stats that he's actually shown. Like MacKinnon, Landeskog, and the rest of the Avalanche, I expect him to play better this year; he's still only 26, a young defenseman.

Like Backes was, it's a reach pick. Again. But I think it fits my team pretty well.

Big improvement last year from EJ: Carrying the puck. Chara's biggest weakness: Transition play. Good idea.
