Yeah, he is kind of a dirtbag. That's fair.

Perry falls into the group of players that I likely wouldn't draft unless he was BY FAR the best player on the board (like, if he was around at pick 50). Him, Marchand, Chris Neil... can't stand them, and will definitely let my personal dislike take over here, haha. There're enough other instigators in the league that I won't have to pick them anyway, I think. But he's definitely good value at that spot; one of the best scorers in the league.

Perry looks like a kid who I went to high school with so I'll always have a negative bias towards.

It will be interesting to see when Nash goes in this draft.
I'm biased against him, but top six winger in a 12 team league?

I was gonna wait and see if Bobrovsky would of still been available with my next pick but didn't want to chance it. So Rask couldn't of been passed up.

I'm not sure I'm going to really go deeply into the merits of undrafted players at the moment.

I will say that Erik Karlsson was the game breaker I referenced a while back. He got strong consideration at 15 from me. This a special, unique skill set. He has the best vision from the backline in the NHL, there is no one that skates with the puck better than him either. Incredible talent and incredible value. There's a case that he's a top-10 or 15 player in the circuit.

Man talk about value with that Karlsson pick. Deep down the middle, game breaker on the back end, the Leafs might actually make the playoffs.

Karlsson was, in my opinion, the "best available player" left. He may be sorta weak defensively, but he'll definitely make up for it in terms of offense. I was looking at stats, though, and didn't realize that he actually was more active defensively than say, Mike Green (in his prime, not now). Great pick-up. Toronto's going to be very, very strong offensively.

Was really surprised that OEK went so early. Not that he is a bad player; I was just hoping to pick him up in the 4th or 5th round. He's going to be in the discussion for Norris over the next couple years, I think. Definitely a good sleeper pick.

Kessel was the best pure scorer left out there, I thought, after Kane. Didn't want him, but knew he'd be going sometime soon.

Are we assuming players injury status and health issues are current? Eg someone out 4-6 months should be considered on the shelf fpr some of the reg season? Or no?

For actual injuries I wouldn't think so but if a player is "injury prone" I think that should be taken into account.

Aanndd the best goalies after Lundqvist (IMO) have also been taken. Was hoping to get Price in the next round, but I think that getting him after Rask & Quick were picked up (I think he's better than Quick, actually) was good value.

My pick was, again, a reach. But I think Backes just provides so much. He was 2nd in the league in hits, 31st in blocked shots for forwards (leading StL), St. Louis's main forward PKer (StL was 2nd in the league), their main player in front of the net for their power play (he had 10 goals, tied for 12th in the league), and was also their captain. He's the grit of my first line.

Sketchy pick in the 3rd round, I think, but one I'm happy with.

I was hoping Backes might make it to the next round, but there was no chance that Price would have.

Backes isn't a first line center at this level, but he's a fine add...probably a little early, as was noted, but he brings more to the table than the numbers could possibly show...

The Kings love centers. Gonna be a problem for ice time with those 3 guys.

Backes can play right wing as well; he started there in the NHL before being moved to center. He & Steen would often float back & forth on their line this past year.
Jeremy Rutherford wrote:But Hitchcock now sees the benefit of having Backes, who ranks No. 5 in the NHL with 216 hits, playing on the wing and Steen in the middle.

"The big plus is that Backes gets to be lead dog on the forecheck, which if I was a defensemen, it wouldn't be a lot of fun," Hitchcock said. "He gets to play with more tempo and more speed. He gets to play with more physical play. He gets to play down low in the offensive zone way more. So that's the advantage for David."

"One guy (Backes) is 75 percent (successful) on the right side [for faceoffs]. The other guy [Steen] is 60 percent on the left"...

Yup, absolutely can play the right side. Might go back there this year even...
