Explain to me like I'm 5 thread
This is a SAFE PLACE for people to ask questions relating to hockey and how things work. Example may be advanced statistics, rules, contract situations, the CBA, etc.
I'll go first. Salary arbitration... can someone explain it to me like I'm 5?

Re: Explain to me like I'm 5 thread
If I understand it:
Player: I am worth 2 mil a year
Team: No you're not
Player: Yes I am
Team: Nope
NHLPA Rep: Yes he is
Hearing Committee: Either: yes or no
Salary is awarded based on ruling.
This is my understanding but someone can confirm or retort appropriately.

Your mom said if you were good while she shopped she would buy you an action figure. You see 3 that you can't decide between. You ask for three. Your mom says she only promised one. You turn to someone walking through the store to decide what should happen.
Edit: in this scenario, its a standard spider man, a spider man in the symbiote costume, and a spider-man 2099 costume.

Re: Explain to me like I'm 5 thread
So is there an official arbitrator for the NHL that makes all the decisions?

Re: Explain to me like I'm 5 thread
If I have seen examples of who an arbiter would be, I don't remember. I remember always seeing "a neutral third-party".

This article is pretty spot on and clearly spells out the process.count2infinity wrote:This is a SAFE PLACE for people to ask questions relating to hockey and how things work. Example may be advanced statistics, rules, contract situations, the CBA, etc.

Re: Explain to me like I'm 5 thread
Unless that link omitted something, if a player takes a team to arbitration, like Spaling did to the Pens, why can't we walk away if we don't like the ruling and then they become a UFA?

Re: Explain to me like I'm 5 thread
Even if no one offers Spaling a contract, the pens can just not offer anything too and he becomes a full unrestricted free agent, right?

That's what I thought. If he gets something crazy Pens need to walk away and someone told me in another thread they can't. I know if the Pens initiated they are stuck.Idoit40fans wrote:Im sure that you can.

Re: Explain to me like I'm 5 thread
If the player elects arbitration and the ruling is for an AAV over $3.5mil, the team can walk away within two days of the ruling. Team elected arbitration is binding regardless of the AAV awarded.DelPen wrote:That's what I thought. Corsi is "any shot is good" and "any shot against is bad"

Thats the best description i've seen for Corsi. Its entirely accurate and also explains why I don't really care for it.

Yea, that's about the best way I've seen in described as well. It basically highlights players that drive play towards the other team's net.

to clarify- corsi is calculated on shots attempted, not just shots on goal, yes?

Re: Explain to me like I'm 5 thread
Correct. Attempted shots, meaning blocks, misses, saves, and goalschampeen wrote:to clarify- corsi is calculated on shots attempted, not just shots on goal, yes?

Re: Explain to me like I'm 5 thread
and fenwick is different as it does not count blocked shots as they may be a result of skill or planning on the part of the defense, yes?

Correct. A blocked shot is not a random occurrence. There is a thought and skill behind it.count2infinity wrote:and fenwick is different as it does not count blocked shots as they may be a result of skill or planning on the part of the defense, yes?

Good God do I hate corsi. Not so much I don't think it isn't useful, mainly because of some of these frat boy Penguin bloggers on twitter. Don't like a player? HIS CORSI SAYS HES GOOD SO EL OH EL OH EL AT YOUR OPINION!! I can't even count how many people I've unfollowed since the playoffs started due to the endless graphs and spreadsheets these people post with "I told you so attitudes." I'm not paid to analyze that crap so I don't care. Send it to the coaches. Means nothing to me.Idoit40fans wrote:Thats the best description i've seen for Corsi. It's like any measuring tool. It is not an end-all, be-all. It should be used coupled with the old eyeball test. "Oh, Rob Scuderi has a terrible Corsi? Well no dip, he starts 85% of his shifts in the defensive zone."DudeMan2766 wrote:Good God do I hate corsi.
