He was my favorite player for a long time when I was younger. I was at the 1994 All Star Game in Pittsburgh and this remains one of my fondest memories. A lot of emotion at the end of a meaningless game. Was awesome.

I read Gwynn has mouth/cheek cancer. I'm guessing he chewed tobacco?

Such a shame. He was my ex-b/f's favorite player.

So sad. When I was young every Pirate game I went to seemed to be against the Padres or Expos. I was always amazed at how impossible Tony Gwynn was to get out. Definitely one of my all time non-bucco favorites

I hope Jim Kelly is not next, honestly. I believe he's also a long time dipper, but I didn't see that mentioned in the recent stories about him.

I remember the first time I looked up his career stats and saw his stolen base numbers for the early part of his career. Jaw dropping. I never got to see skinny Tony Gwynn play. Unfortunately his penchant for putting on weight (185 to 225ish in his career) continued after his playing days to the point where he weighed over 330 pounds. He had lap-band surgery which failed due to his refusal to adhere to the diet. His weight also caused back problems that led to a slipped disc that caused nerve problems in his leg. Even the weight he lost during chemo (80 pounds at one point) would be immediately regained. For as great of a baseball player and as good of a person that he was by all accounts, he unfortunately seemed to be pretty terrible at taking care of himself.

Tobacco-related cancers have taken a few very beloved members of my family. They at least survived a bit longer than 54. Just so sad and way too young.
