Looking around the NHL, best and worst contracts

Post by owtahear »

Capgeek maybe the greatest site (at least sports wise) ever invented. It is fantastic. In my new role as GM wannabe, I found myself on it looking at players and contracts. And I have seen some outrageous contracts both ways. So some of the best, some of the worst.

Best:
Best bargain in the NHL on a non entry level contract? Wayne Simmonds, he is signed through the 18-19 season at less than a $4million cap hit ($3.925/year)
Jack Johnson is signed for the next 4 years at a $4.35million cap hit.
Like Avs long term contracts with Matt Duchesne and Gabriel Landeskog who are signed for the forseeable future at a total cap hit of $11.5 million cap hit.
Duncan Keith at $5.5 million per year through 2023 looks pretty damn good.
Max Pacioretty at $4.5 million per year for the next 5 years.
John Tavares at $5.5 million for the next 4 years is a bargain! Second best contract next to Simmonds.
Okposo is at $2.8 million for 2 more years. Soon will change. Also love the Travis Harmonic contract. The Isles finally look a bit like they are figuring it out...oh, then there was the Thomas Vanek disaster this year.
Ryan McDonough at $4.75 million per year for the next 4 years.

Worst:
Mark Streit is signed for the next 3 years at a $5.25 million cap hit.
Christian Erhoff is signed through the 20-21 year at a $4 million cap hit.
Ville Leino. Buffalo still is paying him $4.5 mill for the next 3 years. He had as many goals as I did this season. He also played 58 more games than I did. He is a forward.
Alexander Semin will be paid $7 Million for the next 4 years. Why?
James Wisniewski (who was as bad as Jack Johnson was good against the Pens) is signed for 3 more years at $5.5 million! Ugh.
Kari Lehtonen at $5.9 million per year for the next 4 years.
Stephen Weiss at $4.9 million per year for the next 5 years.
Brian Campbell at $7.2 million per year, only 2 more years. Ugh. Hope this isn't Letang's future.
Ryan Clowe at $4.9 million per year over the next 4 years.
Brad Richards at $6.67 million per year for the next 6 years! If the Rangers have an amnesty buyout left, they will use it. Worst contract in the league.
David Clarkson at 5.3 million per year for 6 more years. How would you like to pay a 3rd line grinder that kind of money?
Alex Edler at $5 million per year for 5 more years. Nice -39.

Jack Johnson on the bargains list. Kari Lehtonen on the worst list.

I think we're done here...

Relative to his output, how does Ovechkin NOT make the worst list? No player is worth near 1/6th of a team's cap space.

- Remember, JJ is a playoff performer, he just doesn't get to the playoffs often. Pens should trade for him, he can perk up Sid (first time I've had this thought, might consider it more).
- Leino will be bought out, so that contract is null and void
- Keith of today looks good, Keith in a couple years.... ugh

Jack Johnson doesn't suddenly become a playoff performer because the Pens gifted him 2 or 3 goals.

And he's a terrible defenseman. Scoring a few goals that the other team basically handed to you doesn't change that fact.

Okay what's wrong with this picture? Isles are paying Tavares $5.5M for the next 4, and Pens are paying James Neal $5M for the next four. So Tavares is only worth $0.5M more than Neal? :face:

What do you think Toews and Kane are going to make? UFA's at the end of next season and are making $6.3M per now.

I say they each sign for 8 million over 8 years this summer.
