Not terribly shocking given each team's circumstances...

Ottawa is shedding all the OG players to get younger. Spezza is next. If they were willing to part with Alfredsson, it's got to be 100,000x easier to part ways with Spezza if they get what they want.

Toronto just showed faith in Carlyle, so the current captain is the obvious person to try and move to shake things up. His contract being gone (or at least most of it) would open up a lot of space for them to fill some holes and get back into playoff contention next year. Plus, it's the Leafs, so nothing is really shocking.

If they hadn't given Dion 7 million **** dollars I would be interested in him. Good lord I didn't realize that.

If the Leafs cover up to $2 million of that cap hit, I would take Phaneuf. For sure.

Can you do that in the new CBA? I'd be interested in that depending how long he's signed for. Would be nice to have someone with a backbone.

I thought that under the new CBA you can hold up to 1/2 the salary...

The Canes did it when they traded Jokinen to the Pens. His actual cap hit is $3 million but the Canes kept $900k of it so it's only $2.1 for us.

From CapGeek:

RETAINED SALARY TRANSACTIONS
Teams can retain a percentage of a contract’s remaining cap hit, salary and bonuses in trades. The following stipulations apply:
* No more than 50 per cent of the salary/cap hit can be retained
* Salary/cap hit cannot be retained on more than three contracts in one season
* The aggregate cap hits retained cannot exceed 15 per cent of the upper limit
* A contract can be traded only twice where salary/cap hit is retained

So, $3.5M/yr of Phaneuf's salary could be retained by the Leafs, as an example only...

$2 million for the entire deal and I'd do it too. However he's got some mileage on him, so maybe 3 million is where I'd settle.

It would fit the organization's m.o. to bring another player with limited hockey sense in Phaneuf. Decent at one-on-one defense, battles in front of the net but he always just ends up standing in front of his goalie on every sustained attack against because he can't process fast enough what to do next. That's why a more complete defensive player is paired with him in Carl Gunnarsson because they can't have two idiots back there. With Phaneuf's diminishing skating and offensive skills, it'd be nice if he could babysit one of the younger more offensive players like Reilly or Gardiner or to a lesser extent, Franson, but it doesn't work because Dion is not good enough.
