Had their porter last night (friend visited their brewery and brought a variety case back). It was one of the better porters I've had.pronovost19 wrote:Duck Rabbit Amber Ale

3d6p has 4 of the Russian River Damnation left in 12 oz bottles at 11.50 per. I snagged 2 earlier.

I've had the Milk Stout and it's pretty decent...didn't realize that was available up north.

Wanted to try Victory Golden Monkey at the bar, but they kicked the tap before I could.
Is it similar to a here?
Had Finch's Secret Stache in its place. Pretty good and low ABV to boot.

Golden Monkey is a trippel. heavily spiced and heavily boozed. Can be a bit harsh at times due to the alcohol content.
If you want a good idea of the style, try a Delirium Tremens some time. It is much much much smoother tasting.

I always viewed golden monkey as a fin du monde knockoff. Good, but I might as well just have the real thing.the wicked child wrote:Golden Monkey is a trippel. heavily spiced and heavily boozed. Can be a bit harsh at times due to the alcohol content.

Yeah, La Fin Du Monde would be a better choice as well. I used to love GM before I became acquainted with better examples of the style. I still like it, but I'd take DT or LFDM over it any day.
I suggested DT over it as I think it is a good entry point to the style. LFDM while awesome might be overload if you are not used to the style.

Beware of Duck Rabbit. I got a 6 pack of Rabid Duck and all 6 bottles were infected. I emailed them several times and never heard back. Will not be getting their beers anymore. I have heard they have an infection issue that is going unaddressed.

I've heard these stories about Duck Rabbit a lot. I'm going to avoid them altogether indefinitely

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
It's too bad because I think they make decent beers but it's just not worth the gamble. Their website is also embarrassingly awful. I went to an event those guys were at a few years ago and they seemed like nice guys. Brought a cask of End of Reason, which was a sour porter. Thinking back, it was probably just their regular porter that had an infection and they marketed it as a different beer with a "sour" flavor to it, haha.shafnutz05 wrote:I've heard these stories about Duck Rabbit a lot. Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
Back from Cooperstown. Did the Brewery Ommegang beer tour.
I enjoyed it, but would have enjoyed it more without the tour guide's family. They apparently thought it would be funny to harass him as he gave the tour. And when they weren't harassing him they talked loudly and acted like idiots. At one point the rest of us glared at them until they finally shut up.
Had lunch at the cafe in the brewery. Chicken and Belgian waffles with a vanilla pepper sauce and raspberry jam. Friend 1 had split pea and ham soup with fresh bread, grapes and locally made white cheddar. Friend 2 had the chicken sandwich with spicy mayo and potato salad potato chips. We all agreed the food was fabulous.
Came back with 2 glasses and 2 new (to me) beers. Witte, and Hop House. Tasted the Hop House there. Excellent.

nope, only heard it mentioned in this thread and read high praise about Russian River stuff in general.eddysnake wrote:I almost drank one tonight, but held off. Have you had it before?JS© wrote:3d6p has 4 of the Russian River Damnation left in 12 oz bottles at 11.50 per. I snagged 2 earlier.
I'm low-carbing right now to help burn off some winter weight, so no beer for a few more weeks. 1 bottle of Damnation would probably be about 4 days worth of carbs, and that would be no good at the moment.

I only heard one other instance of somebody getting a bad batch of Duck Rabbit and that was a few months ago in this thread.shafnutz05 wrote:I've heard these stories about Duck Rabbit a lot. I'm going to avoid them altogether indefinitely

Damnation is okay. Not worth the money imo. That's the only RR I can say that about, though.

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
Picked up one of those $20 cases of Swing. That's a great deal, it's solid enough to have a case of around.
Then found Old Raspy in the mix six at GE. That was a likely mistake.

It's not noticeably better than fin du monde...and only 3 times the price.Kraftster wrote:Damnation is okay. Not worth the money imo. That's the only RR I can say that about, though.
Is that brewery any cheaper if you're in California?

I am cool with getting an infected beer as long as the brewer makes an effort to do something about it. Seems like there has been an infection problem with lots of their beers.

Yeah, I easily prefer LFDM.shmenguin wrote:It's not noticeably better than fin du monde...and only 3 times the price.Kraftster wrote:Damnation is okay. Not worth the money imo. That's the only RR I can say that about, though.

I want to say the sours were $12-$14 when I was in Portland. That's a pretty good price.

I bought a bottle of Saison Dupont yesterday morning and resisted all temptation to open it last night.
If that's not good enough for the Pens this evening, screw 'em.

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
It's $140 for a case of damnation
It's $40 for a case of golden monkey
One is better than the other but that price difference does not compute.
