Interesting. All these rumors with the caps & Wayne Gretzky ... nhl getting an elite mgmt group.
Sadly, still same garage culture in the referee union.

I'm not sure if I like this. I've been safe knowing 2 turds were running the show in Washington and Philly and now both out in same off-season.

I don't think ex-Players turn out to be good GMs. I'd prefer a savvy front office-man any time.

Or Garth Snow or Mike Milbury or Bob Gainey, et al.shafnutz05 wrote:See: Paul HolmgrenTheHammer24 wrote:I don't think ex-Players turn out to be good GMs.
One thing Ron Francis has going for him is some on the job experience already, as did some others who transitioned like Bergevin in MTL. He paid his dues after retiring to learn in various roles and it's working. Hextall has some very real experience himself with the Kingsand I hate to say it, but good hire for Filthy.

Could be. But he did just spend 7 years under Dean Lombardi and won a cup as an assistant GM recently.TheHammer24 wrote:I don't think ex-Players turn out to be good GMs. I'd prefer a savvy front office-man any time.

Hextall is pretty highly regarded around the league. The feeling is that teams were inquiring about his services and the Flyers decided to pull the trigger on the promotion now rather than risk losing him. Roughly, like the Jason Garrett/Dallas Cowboys scenario. I think they paid Garrett to stay for a year or so and then promoted him to the big cheese shortly thereafter. To my knowledge, Hextall has a good reputation around the league as an executive.

I didn't realize that Gainey is associated with the Stars. That feels wrong.

Thugs in the front office, thugs behind the bench... explains a lot...

It's so aggravating when the Flyers do something (arguably) smart.

It's better when they do something that seems smart at the time and then it totally backfires. Like Bryzgalov. Signing Pronger to what they thought was not an over-35 deal, when, in fact, it was. The attempted signing of Tomas Hyka.
So, here's hoping he's the worst GM in history (until his successor steps in and takes the crown), but that seems unlikely...

He's got to go after a stud d-man this off-season. It will be interesting to see who and what he offers to get it.

Well, they're already paying Mark Streit a butt-ton of cash. The real question will be whether or not he thinks that's good enough.sniper wrote:He's got to go after a stud d-man this off-season.
