Matt Cooke hit on Tyson Barrie
I know there is some discussion in the other games thread, but with his in person hearing scheduled for Wednesday, this probably will be a big deal.
Hit in question:

I would have liked to see Cooke make a little more effort in getting out of the way...but this looks pretty bad.
Avs columnist Adrian Dater, late of trolling Penguins fans with attendance numbers pre-Crosby, has been beating the drum on hanging Cooke since the hit last night.

meh. I wouldn't listen to a damn thing that an Avs/Bruins/Hurricanes/Rangers/Blue Jackets beat writer has to say about Cookie. they're not impartial.Digitalgypsy66 wrote:I know there is some discussion in the other games thread, but with his in person hearing scheduled for Wednesday, this probably will be a big deal.

the Avs have no room to call anybody dirty after what Claude Lemieux did back in the day.

I thought he turned his game around. It's a shame.

PTI is pretty bad at hockey, but Tony just made a valid point. If the Backes hit is worth three games, and Cooke gets anything more than that, the message is the NHL values knees more than brains.

Re: Matt Cooke hit on Tyson Barrie
In the 3rd replay it looks like he has him lined up square for a body check and last minute Barrie darts to his right to avoid it . From that angle it doesn't look intentional to me but given Cooke's reputation they wont go easy on him.

What's the longest kneeing suspension ever given? Bet it's no more than 3 games.

Re: Matt Cooke hit on Tyson Barrie
His record alone would earn him more than 3 games, but they empty heads on ESPN wouldn't report it that way. Wonder if the NHL even cares how they're perceived.

I'm not sure about ever...but Bryan Marchment (who else?) got 8 games for taking out Kevin Dineen some years ago...shmenguin wrote:What's the longest kneeing suspension ever given? Bet it's no more than 3 games.

it's quite simple, any suspension Cookie gets will be based more on past history than on this one incident.

It will give Milbury something else to talk about.shoeshine boy wrote:it's quite simple, any suspension Cookie gets will be based more on past history than on this one incident.

That hit is worth a suspension no matter who makes it or whether they have a history or not.

PTI is just bad. I can't stand either one of those two blow-hards. One of many reasons I watch as little ESPN as possible.dodint wrote:PTI is pretty bad at hockey, but Tony just made a valid point. Re: Matt Cooke hit on Tyson Barrie
He should get 5 at least. Love what Cooke when do when he's not being an idiot, but ugh, this looks really bad.
Also, PTI is awesome. Wish they would actually talk about NHL games instead of just "Cooke injures Barrie" or "Seabrook injures Backes".

Eh, or that Cooke is a notorious repeat offender and Seabrook has never had a blemish on his recorddodint wrote:PTI is pretty bad at hockey, but Tony just made a valid point. Cooke isn't considered a repeat offender, correct? I thought once you went X amount of time under the new CBA, you lose repeat offender status.

Re: Matt Cooke hit on Tyson Barrie
That only relates to loss of salary. If you're a repeat offender you lose each day's pay instead of games' pay. As far as suspensions go, your whole record is on the table.

Re: Matt Cooke hit on Tyson Barrie
Also, players are not paid for the playoffs, AFAIK. So the salary thing is irrevelant anyhow.
I looked at that hit again last night, and it was worse than I initially thought...I have feeling he gets dinged up pretty good here. More like 10 games than 2...

Yeah, of those knee on knees recently, that one stands out a lot. It definitely stands as a horrible play on its own merits, Cooke's name aside.

Re: Matt Cooke hit on Tyson Barrie
today in New York. probably be at least 5:00 or 6:00 before they announce. Wild don't play tonight so there's no hurry. pretty sure they've already erased his name from the board in their lockerroom.

Re: Matt Cooke hit on Tyson Barrie
The more I see this hit the more it looks like the other player changes the angle late, and that should be a mitigating factor. But knowing the NHL, that won't matter. Which is a shame.

That whole play is on Cooke. He deserves every game he gets.
