The only head coach in Nashville Predators history so far will not be back next season.
Barry Trotz will not return for a 16th season with the team, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Trotz has been with the Predators since the franchise's first game in 1998, hired by general manager David Poile to steward a rag-tag group of players plucked in the expansion draft mixed with younger prospects.
He evolved into much more, becoming one of the most respected coaches in the NHL, thanks to his ability to deal with the difficult issues that come with being an expansion team in a non-traditional hockey market.

This will at least be more reasonable to consider than Tortorella to the Penguins

Only because Torts to the Pens was about as unreasonable as you can get.

I love what Trotz brings to the table. He won't last long on the open market.

While I am not hoping the Pens tank, if they happen to fall short of expectations Trotz would make a lot of sense.

Or just hire him, put him on the bench, and have him stare at HCDB.AlexPKeaton wrote:Just fire DB now and hire him for the playoffs.

I'm I the only person who thinks he looks like Rip Torn? A heavier version...

He did everything he could with what he had to work with and through some pretty rough ownership struggles at times, but nothing lasts forever and it was probably time for both sides to part ways. He'll be HC somewhere else next year if he wants it.

Re: Trotz out in Nashville
Unless Nashville realizes that scoring goals is a prerequisite to winning, they aren't going to be in the playoffs again. Trotz got blood out of a stone with that team.

Re: Trotz out in Nashville
Unfortunately for Nashville, Trotz was far from the problem with the team. Their GM on the other hand, David Poile, is not a Stanley Cup contender-building GM. He's good for a young team, without money. Can't get them over the hump and doesn't learn from his mistakes. Prior to coming to Nashville, was Capitals GM for 15 yeas and made almost identical mistakes.
He can't draft, he's not too great at trading, and always seems to mishandle RFAs/offer sheets.
Just look at this year's free agency class for Nashville. Nashville has been desperate for scoring and yet they go out and get Stalberg, Cullen, Hendricks, and Nystrom. I like all of them, but that's the last thing Nashville needed.
Nashville won't be a really good team until Poile takes his talents elsewhere.

Firing Trotz is like firing your mechanic because you bought a car that doesn't have an engine.

Re: Trotz out in Nashville
Technically did he just not get his contract renewed? I realize them not wanting him back is basically the same, but I thought they just let his contract run out and go in a different direction?

For some of the head coaches on the hot seat, Trotz being available now is going to give them some sleepless nights.
