I guess it's not surprising to see a not so good defensive player who compiles points on the pp to have a big minus number.
Wow... he only has 11 even strength assists all year

And how many of those 11 assists are from actually passing to a teammate and not off a rebound?

Re: Good news/Bad news for OVI (mostly bad)
The Caps are IMO one of the most mishandled teams in the league.
There doesn't seem to be any real rhyme or reason behind their roster choices. You can argue both sides of AO, but I think they just didn't properly build around him.
Backstrom is a great center, but the completely wrong guy for Ovie. Ovie and Backstrom together is basically "too many cooks in the kitchen." When I think of proper centerman for Ovie I think of Eric Staal, Thornton, Richards, etc...
If I were the Caps I'd do a bit of an overhaul, not a rebuilding but a change in personnel. I would take a big swing for Kessler.
EDIT: I'm not implying to trade Backstrom. I'm implying the have another top center brought in and do whatever they can do get that.

Re: Good news/Bad news for OVI (mostly bad)
Backstrom is a great center for Ovechkin. He's a terrific passer and a consistent PPG player, even had over 100 points in 2010 in what was IMO Ovechkin's best year. Their problem is that Ovechkin seriously regressed as a puck carrier and multi dimensional player, they have very few secondary offensive threats, and their defense is atrocious.

Re: Good news/Bad news for OVI (mostly bad)
I don't even think it's much of an overall personnel issue for them. It all boils down to Ovechkin. When your offense runs through one guy, you're going to be easy to shut down. It'll be even easier if that guy doesn't play defense.

He has almost half his goals on the powerplay. Honestly you'd think teams would know that he doesn't move from the circle on the PP. How do you let him score?

He scores like 98% of their goals. Say what you will about his flaws, but the dude can score like nobody else can.
It that's typical then I wish we had a typical player like that. Ha!

Re: Good news/Bad news for OVI (mostly bad)
He's a great talent when it comes to goal scoring. He's not good enough anywhere else to take the team to a championship all by himself. I don't know a good cross sport comparison, but Reggie Miller popped into my mind. 2nd best 3 point shooter in history but 0 championships.
Why don't teams cover him on the PP? Not sure, but obviously they feel it's easier to just let the team do that than worry about the other 4 guys on the ice. And results show that 55% of the time in the regular season, it works to not worry about him.

and a minus 34. only Steve Ott (mostly earned with Buffalo and played 5 more games than OvenChicken) and Edler (Canucks. enough said) have as many or more. pathetic.

Still have a shot at the playoffs though.
Plus I guess Halak just bought his ticket out of town with what he pulled last night.

He told Oates that he did not feel comfortable playing his old team. Oates, being not the one to through his players under the bus, ( I am being sarcastic) told the media. They are not happy with him of course. Imagine if the Caps had lost last night.....

Yeah, not exactly how a pro should feel about a huge game like this. I agree, though, that there was really no need to make it public.MarioLives wrote:He told Oates that he did not feel comfortable playing his old team. Re: Good news/Bad news for OVI (mostly bad)
While my Caps-fan friends of mine and I agree he will never be traded, it's fun to play the game with them, 'would you accept this?'
I think the Caps would always want more for Ovi than any other team would offer. What do you guys think would be fair? It would probably be some combination of player+pick+prospect. I asked how about Tyler Seguin straight up. They were all instant no's and offended that I'd even suggest it. Seguin is younger, with a better contract, and just could be the better overall player. Would Dallas even do this deal? What do you guys think would be fair for Ovi?

Younger. Better contract. More points than Ovi. What you lack in goal scoring you gain in a more well rounded player.Gaucho wrote:Why would Washington want Seguin over Ovi?
