NHL Awards Thread - Results in Post #54
To Whom It May Concern:
As many of you may well know, I'm a big hockey fan in addition to being a Penguins fan...as a result, I'm fairly opinionated and when it comes to the NHL Awards (and votes) that are given to players that don't qualify, I get a little bit...uneasy...when players get all-star team votes for positions they don't play, or when players get Selke votes for the shear irony of it, or when a homer writer puts his two d-men first for the Norris and then just hands out a couple of ancillary votes based on the sorting of points or plus/minus or whatever...it's total bollocks...
So, we'll do our own...
If you feel that you are well in-tune with the NHL outside of the Penguins and you follow the league closely, watch a lot of games and you feel you have a decent grasp what has happened this season, then please, share your thoughts...
Submit a ballot via PM to me (please do not post!!!) before 5 pm EDT on the first day of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for your vote to be counted. Incomplete ballots will not be counted.
What I need from you:
- Hart Memorial Trophy - MVP: Top 5
- James Norris Memorial Trophy - Best Defenseman: Top 5
- Georges Vezina Trophy - Best Goalkeeper: Top 3
- Calder Memorial Trophy - Best Rookie: Top 5
- Frank J Selke Trophy - Best Defensive Forward: Top 5
- Lady Byng Memorial Trophy - Most Gentlemanly Player: Top 5
- Jack Adams Trophy - Best Coach: Top 3
- General Manager of the Year - Best GM: Top 3
- All Star Teams
G: Top 3
D: Top 3
D: Top 3
LW: Top 3
C: Top 3
RW: Top 3
Please research the positions or post in here with any questions. Please, again, do not post your ballots in this thread to prevent bias.
Thanks!

Ranked, please. As each voting place is assigned a value (10-7-5-3-1), as per the NHL award voting procedures...Idoit40fans wrote:Is it your 5 best or 1-5 ranked?

Read the fine print: I get 10%.dodint wrote:Can I sell my vote on Deadspin?
Additionally, unrelated to the quoted, I'll be doing my best to verify the ballots. Not making suggestions, just making sure positions are on point, Calder people are eligible for the Calder, etc. You'll receive a confirmation within 24 hours.

Also of note, the Vezina and the All-Star Team for goaltenders don't have any great real difference, for our purposes...the GMs vote for the Vezina, the media votes for the all-star teams...

btw...I would think you'd want them in order. So the person getting the first place vote, gets credit for it.

Re: NHL Awards Thread - Submit Your Votes
So for the all-star teams, we're designating between LD and RD? Or just splitting it into two groups of Top-3 (for voting purposes)?

This. So if you feel that the two best d-men in the league are Noah Welch and Martin Strbak. Your ballot should be:MRandall25 wrote:I just split into 2 groups of 3.
D: Noah Welch, Steve Poapst, Janne Laukkanen
D: Martin Strbak, Hans Jonsson, Brad Werenka
Good question, meecro, thank you.

...Am I wrong for filling my all star ballot under the thought that Welch and Strbak were assumed to be 1 and 2?

I'm not sure how many previous games played the limit is so does Gustav Nyquist count as a rookie?
I've been extremely busy this week so I'll get to work on my ballot next week.

Meow - I think Noah Welch belongs in the discussion. But have you seen the #fancystats on Martin Strbak, he doesn't have enough CorsiClose QoC to zone start his way out of the PDO...in other words, I have no idea....Staggy wrote:I'm not sure how many previous games played the limit is so does Gustav Nyquist count as a rookie?

Staggy - No, Nyquist is not a rookie. He played two previous seasons in the NHL in which he accrued 6+ games in each. Therefore, he is not a rookie. Though, if we were to create a Sergei Makarov Trophy, he'd be way up there...

I see MacKinnon is now being compared to Wayne Gretzky. I guess comparing Maatta to Lidstrom makes sense then.

Re: NHL Awards Thread - Submit Your Votes
It was certainly inspired by the streak ... I have to admit I forgot where I read it. But I think in that same article MacKinnon was said to have a "Crosby-like rookie season".

Re: NHL Awards Thread - Submit Your Votes
I heard it during an Avalanche game I was watching last week. It was homer announcers basking in the glow of a new toy, though. Not sure if it made it into print anywhere.
