I don't know, I thought they gave you about 5 feet to the wall on the line change, 2-3-4 are not technically "on the ice" to be counted.

Even not counting those it's still 6 guys, so unless it was an empty net situation too many men.

oh yea, 6 guys would be an okay call, but I would imagine on a wholesale change, you could easily find things just like this.

It's a pet peeve when I see a guy 30 feet off the bench replacing a guy who just got to the bench 1 second ago, and miraculously that guy who just jumped on now has great position on a penguins forward with the puck.

And then it kind of gets looser and looser and then someone says, "hey!" and they go back to calling it tight again. There was a playoffs a few years ago where there two dozen too many men calls or some outrageousness...

I always thought the league is way to forgiving on how line changes happen. When these over laps happen that whole side of the ice is shutdown you can't make play through there.

I always said if you want a small tweek to increase scoring tighter line changes i think would have a profound effect. If you couldn't go on the ice until the player arrives 3 feet from the bench then you would have much more open ice and the possibility of odd man breaks.

Or just do this for OT.

Did anyone watch video to see how that still shot occurred? Just judging from the still, my best guess is: players 1, 2, 3, 4, and 9 were leaving the ice on a full change. Players 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11 jumped on to replace them, with somebody getting confused so they momentarily had 6 guys jump on to replace 5. But just from the still it's possible player 3 or 4 never touched the ice, and was dangling a leg over the boards in preparation for a change that never happened. That would be amusing, because it's possible with a reasonably loose interpretation of the line change rules that there was no penalty on the play. But I doubt it really happened that way.

As an aside, it's kind of fun to have both benches all jump onto the ice to play the last 30 seconds or so of a beer league game 13 vs. 11, and the referees usually laugh it off. But they probably take that more seriously in the NHL.
