At some point, your great players have to play like great players. A coach can only do so much.
This is the Russian philosophy. And its why a team like Fin is still playing, while the Russians are at home drinking.
I dunno, Finland seems to be able to rely on their best player.
Well, most of Finland's best players are injured... or not playing. But yeah, Rask has been good. But they're having success because they're playing as a team; credit the players for sure, but also credit the coach.
You know who else was playing as a team? The US, up until their last two games.

The US looks like they've quit playing.

The only time I see Parise do anything is when he's on the bench taking off his helmet.

Same here. Motivation level isn't as high after being so disappointed against Canada. A number of pages back when predicting the medal round, I thought we'd finish 4th (to the Russians) for this exact reason...and then got asked if I wasn't American. :pop:

I don't really think it is too smart to 100% correlate what Bylsma is doing at the Olympics to what he has done in the NHL. Having said that, it is not doing him any favors that in big games, including now the Olympics, his teams have a real hard time scoring goals.

Well yeah, they lost to good teams. Losing to the russians would be unacceptable.

I have trouble calling it the same given the formats, but it looks really familiar...or at least yesterday did.

Bad news for USA. I don't even know if its possible to score three goals on Rask at this point.

True, they looked great... against teams that didn't play a defensive system. Whether its coincidence or not, I can't say. But it is what it is.

It looks like they're trying to do too much, instead of playing like a team. Seems like they've forgotten everything that made them successful. Simple plays are no longer simple because they're making it too hard on themselves.

Lack of puck support by having such drastic distance between players. You need all five to compete. You can't have 2 or 3 players trailing outside.
Against lesser opponents DBs teams can bypass this reality. However, team USA is going all-in in the 3rd. This game is far from over.

The US shredded the bad teams, barely beat a Russian team that wasn't very good, got dominated by Canada and appears to be losing to a good not great Finnish team.

If you look at the total body of work, I think everyone was rating this team too high the whole time.

It's hard to support the puck when certain players are trying to do it by themselves and don't use their teammates for help/support.

I can't wait to boo Crosby, Kunitz, Price, and Subban at the first game back after the Olympics.

For as much criticism as Team Russia got, I think the US deserves just as much. They completely fell apart.

Exactly what I was thinking also. To me they did well to at least get to the medal round.

This is exactly like watching Pens-Bruins last year. Not as soul-crushing but close. It's amazing to watch a team go from pure offensive domination to completely helpless overnight. I seriously have to wonder if this is a result of Bylsma's coaching or if he's just gotten this unlucky at the worst possible time two years in a row.

Man, the prospect of USA not scoring a single goal in the Semi-Final and the Bronze Medal game is something.
