Yup. Their forwards and goaltending rank right there with with Sweden, US, and Canada. Their defense ranks with the Slovaks and Czechs. If they had adopted a patient, defensive system similar to the Finns, they could be as dangerous as anyone in the tournament.

I wonder what would happen if some these uber-talented Russians had become defenseman instead of forwards? They could use some Doughty's and Letang's in their program.

canada and U.S had to leave NHL all stars forwards out of their lineup due to numbers. i'm curious how russia is supposed to rank right up there with them, particularly canada.

I don't think they rank at forward either, but the disparity on defense is gigantic.

Yeah, I don't think the forwards even need to be discussed due to the defense alone.

What matters is who makes the team, not who's left off it.

Russia's top 3 forwards are better than anyone on the US squad. Certainly they don't have the depth of the US program, but Nichushkin/Tarasenko on the 4th line is nothing to sniff at. Give that forward group a defense that could move the puck and join the rush, and their game-breaking talent suddenly becomes noticeable. I don't think the US would have escaped with the W from that game last saturday.

It's not that they don't have the depth, it's that they don't even sniff the depth.

And we're totally giving up on them ranking with Canada right?

I guess what this is ultimately about is that Russia got eliminated at an appropriate spot. They really didn't have any practical chance of winning this tournament.

Great individual talents don't always make great teams. They decided to build a team with the face of Kovalchuk. No one can argue he is an elite individual talent. But he's not a team player based on everything I have ever seen from the guy.

This Russian team reminds me of the disaster the US team was at Nagano. A bunch of me first players who didn't think they had to play Stanley Cup playoff hockey for 2 weeks instead of All-Star weekend hockey.

Gonchar would have improved that team, which tells me a lot.

I think Russia's top 3 forwards are more talented than anyone on the Finnish squad.

Jussi Jokinen has the most points of an NHL player on the Finnish roster this season so yeah. The top 6 Russian forward probably have more talent than any of the Finnish forwards, but the majority of the Russians forwards either didn't play hard or smartly. Finland looked like the better team the whole tournament and they deserved to win.

If Russia started Bobrovsky things might have ended differently. if they had a coach who appears to not have been a complete moron that could have helped too.

5

Bozek from the US (because it sounds like Tyler Bozak)
McLaughlin, US goalie (RMU)

Natalie Spooner, Canada
Minttu Tuominen, Finland
Emma Laaksonen, Finland

All 3 OSU grads. Their names hang on a banner in the Ice Rink.
