Was watching a documentary on NASA space flights last night starting with the Mercury missions. Its just amazing what occured over that time / through the Apollo missions (what was acheived with that technology and computing power). Its a real shame where our space program is now given our technology.count2infinity wrote:space is awesome.

Re: LGP Science Thread
VY Canis Majoris, the largest star to be discovered, is so large compared to our sun that the surface of the star would extent between the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn.

It would take light almost 2 hours to travel from one side of canis major to the other. Ridiculous.

Just learned a new word: sonoluminescence.
If you implode a bubble in a liquid using sound waves, when the bubbles collapse they produce light.

http://debatelive.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
reminder for anyone that was interested. Bill Nye will be debating Ken Ham on whether creationism is a viable model of origin in today's modern, scientific era. It starts at 7 this evening.
I won't be able to watch tonight, but I plan on watching it at a different time. I have a pretty good idea of what's going to happen. There will not be a true debate, this will likely just turn into a strange argument that will likely be cut up into little snippets of jabs that each will take at the other's expense and people will share just those little snippets of who they agree with already, and nothing will be truly learned from the debate. People will only be watching to reinforce what they already think is true. I hope I'm wrong, and I hope it's awesome, but I have my doubts.

It's live so I don't think it will be cut up until after the debate. If that's what you meant...
I almost bought tickets to the event but never found a cheap way to get there and back. I'll be watching live. I'm with c2i that I hope it's a viable debate but I doubt it will be.

I meant after the debate. It will likely be cut up into small snippets afterwards by other people and that's going to be the "big news" from the event is them attacking one another.

Yep. That's a given. I'm so glad I deleted FB. Both debaters are well educated and respectful so I am optimistic.count2infinity wrote:I meant after the debate. Re: LGP Science Thread
you can't have a rational debate at a creationist museum and its pointless for someone like Nye to even accept the debate to begin with.

You can't have a rational debate with someone that thinks that Dumbledore is real and created you. Location doesn't matter.

Re: LGP Science Thread
I love the "IM RIGHT. YOU'RE WRONG. THEREFORE ONE CANNOT HAVE A RATIONAL DEBATE WITH YOU!" talk. Why don't you listen and then post your opinion. Maybe your stance remains. Maybe you decide that, while your opinion stays the same, that a rational debate happened.

Also, I've had many rational debates with people on this board re: creation and faith.

You do not need to have faith in something that is rational, that is the point of needing to have faith.

exactly. you can't debate someone that believes that the earth is 6,000 years old and a location with exhibits of dinosaurs and people existing peacefully. its an absolute joke that is completely insulting to actual scientists that have devoted their lives studying reaching the highest levels of their various fields.

Re: LGP Science Thread
I am not going to go as far as to say insulting... When the vast majority of the people on the planet support a version of a topic ("version" due to the vast number of different organized religions) you don't just ignore it.

The moment people use saying people believe in dumbledore, they lose all credibility with me, because you are insulting an entire group of people.

And no I am not a creationist. I believe in evolution/intelligent design.
