Oilers active in the trade market

Post by Jim »

Since the beginning of the season the Oilers have made 6 trades.

They picked up goalies Scrivens and Brossoit; forwards Pinizzotto, Horak, Hendricks and Combs; and #4 and #6 picks.

They gave up goalies Roy and Dybnyk: forwards Omark, Nesbitt, Martindale and Brown; defenseman Smid; and a #3 pick.

Lots of players moved, but no one that really fills any major needs to help the worst team in the league. Is this a guy that is trying to go with a quantity of trades as opposed to quality in an attempt to keep the press and fans off of his back a bit?

Well, a number of those names were acquired to help out in Oklahoma City. Obviously, they're trying to address goaltending: Dubnyk, Olivier Bellavance-Roy out, Scrivens, young Laurent Brossoit and volatile Ilya Bryzgalov in...the rest of the guys, sans Ladi Smid, aren't really players of great note...Omark is a YouTube all-star, Martindale is a slug...Horak could be a 3rd liner, Hendricks adds some man strength to a team of boys, but he needs to be put in a position to succeed, he can't really make his own breaks...

I have to imagine that if I ever became a GM in the NHL, I would make a lot of similar moves...I'd want to make sure I get my guys for both the NHL and AHL club, as I'm responsible for both...you're responsible for the whole organization and sometimes you want to make those type of moves...it also, as a new GM, helps you build relationships with GMs and that can go a long way when negotiating too...

Look at teams that are "friends" out there...sometimes you see a team dump a minor league contract on someone in short order to make another deal, sometimes you ask a team to put a player on waivers and all that...so completed deals give a sense of accomplishment, comradery, what have you...it's important to establish those relationships though...

Like Nick Saban, he might not belong in the big show.
At least that's the impression I get, from the people who doubt him.

this is my opinion. his systems do not work at the NHL level, particularly with the lack of skilled defense that the Oilers have.

they want another no. 1 overall draft pick. Build a loser and you can win for years to come. Nothing they have done has made them even marginally good.

The weird thing is that will all of their #1'2.... they still suck. Even if all of those top picks had pulled them up to mid-card status... but no.

the Oilers have spent draft after draft getting forwards. if they had gotten even just a few of the talented D that the Pens have stockpiled in that same amount of time it might be a different story for them.

Yeah you really run into serious depth issues when you spend all of your high picks on one position. They should learn from the Pens.
