Negative nellies.
Don't listen to them Mikey.
Those NYU guys probably have their sights set on Goldman Sachs where they can make millions.

I like how Mikey says he doesn't have experience, thinks he likely won't get the job, not even sure he wants the job, but figured he'd apply anyways, and Factorial still finds the need to tell him how he's not right for the job, along with the 5 calculus courses humble brag. Nice guy...

Re: Devils hiring Director of Analytics...paging Mikey287...
Thanks for the support, guys, really, but Factorial isn't wrong at all...I'm not qualified as far as what they're looking for in that specific position...from a knowledge of statistical interfaces, it's not close and you could easily make the case that even from just a hockey perspective I'm not qualified...but there's no harm in putting my name in there...
But Factorial isn't wrong or offending me or anything of the sort...

Those calculus classes were at Penn State, so I bet DTMB would hire him.

Re: Devils hiring Director of Analytics...paging Mikey287...
Yeah i dont think they need a hockey person. The data this position comes up with will be going to player development, coaches, gm...just another source like an amateur or advance scout. I would think it would be cool to be looked at enough to get a sorry but no response though. Id certainly get my application deleted immediately haha.

I'd assume that LL would hire someone similar. NYU has a great applied math program, so he doesn't have to look far.
I do think analytics are interesting, but it's never something I'd dive into as a fan. I deal with data and programming all day and would rather forget it and just enjoy the beauty of hockey as is.

My response was to the cheerleading not to Mikey who I said knows his hockey and who I always enjoy reading his posts.count2infinity wrote:I like how Mikey says he doesn't have experience, thinks he likely won't get the job, not even sure he wants the job, but figured he'd apply anyways, and Factorial still finds the need to tell him how he's not right for the job, along with the 5 calculus courses humble brag. Yeah, I guess I'll just apply for a job that requires a phd in chemistry because I had I chem 1 and 2 in college. This isn't personal.count2infinity wrote:I like how Mikey says he doesn't have experience, thinks he likely won't get the job, not even sure he wants the job, but figured he'd apply anyways, and Factorial still finds the need to tell him how he's not right for the job, along with the 5 calculus courses humble brag. Re: Devils hiring Director of Analytics...paging Mikey287...
I doubt it, considering Mikey views the conclusions drawn from modern analytics to be oftentimes dubious. Which is, you know, kind of the point of this specific job?
The reality is that the job is going draw people with advanced degrees (think PhDs) in statistical modeling, scientific fields, etc. Eg, people like Eric at BSH:
http://www.sloansportsconference.com/?p=10553" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Would I want the stat nerd to coach my players on the finer points of defensive positioning, or how to execute a breakout? Nope.
Would I want mikey to run my regression analyses and draw conclusions from zone entries/exits? Nope.
And before c2i yells at me, I can't do either of the above (or at least, I can't do the second beyond very amateur status). Mikey most certainly can and does do the first.

I've forgotten how to do regression analysis and wouldn't be able to data analysis on zone entries, even if I hadn't.

Professional hockey is the bizness for brainiacs?
See puck,
Skate fast to puck,
Strike puck with stick toward net,
Score...
(or so how some may see it)

Re: Devils hiring Director of Analytics...paging Mikey287...
Reading the Brooks Orpik post reminded me of this thread. Out of curiosity, did any of those (you know who you are) that are qualified for such a job apply? Did anyone that you know apply?
