Best cap compliant roster?
Talking with others to determine best salary cap compliant team for this season. Hoping for some input here. I must be missing some players. thanks for the help in advance.
so far
Kunitz - Crosby - Yakupov
Steen - Toews - Kane
Cooke - Hanzal - Clutterbuck
Cliché - Slater - Hall
MacDonald - Weber
Hedman - Letang
Brodin - Gudas
Harding
Bishop
+ $1,907,024 of cap space. So after 13th forward and 7th defenseman, have about $700,000 of cap space....which is about minimum a team would want entering a season.
I am talking best team....powerplay, penalty kill, speed, toughness, skill, youth, leadership, etc.

We're allowed to use ELCs?

Re: Best cap compliant roster?
Little unfair to use entry-level deals, I think, but the "based on performance this season" caveat is interesting...it kind of wipes Yak, Hall, Letang out, in my opinion too...
I ended up using two ELCs I think...
Tavares-Crosby-Kane
Kunitz-Duchene-St. Louis
Raymond-Johansen-Zuccarello
Beleskey-Eakin-Reaves
Fowler-Keith
McDonagh-Sekera
Demers-Russell
Bernier or Harding
Khudobin
$1.578 mil in cap space if it's Harding, $578K if it's Bernier.

Kunitz-Crosby-Okposo
Steen-Backes-Jagr
Saad-Couturier-Niederreiter
Cooke-Helm-Clutterbuck
Seabrook-Keith
Fowler-Hedman
Niskanen-Gudas
MacDonald
Varlamov
Bishop
Would be just under the salary cap. A lot of defensively responsible players, good bit of grit, and an offense that can keep up with anyone.

I know Saad is, didn't think Couturier was but when I look again he still is. When I went through it originally I used the 1.75M cap hit he will have next year when his new deal kicks in.MRandall25 wrote:Saad and Couturier are still on their ELCs, no?

Re: Best cap compliant roster?
Good stuff. My defense is not that great. For some reason I couldn't get away from Weber. My first couple tries were over the cap, and Letang was a replacement for more expensive players. (Despite having a disappointing season to date, I do put a lot of value to Letang.)
I do like my centers, but Backes and Couturier are interesting.
I forgot about Jagr...
I did want it to be like real cap management...with cap space to use for future injuries and with full roster.
It is an interesting exercise that makes it clear...in salary cap league, it's not just a player but a player AND their contract that is important.
Here on a Pens site, someone left CROSBY off the team, and NO ONE took Malkin ( and his contract goes up next year ).

Re: Best cap compliant roster?
Yeah i built the defense firs obviously. Taking subban was a struggle, but for the pp alone that contract is nice. I cant believe couture wasnt on every team.

Re: Best cap compliant roster?
Pavelski - Crosby - Horton
Vrbata - Duchene - Perron
Boyes - S. Koivu - Jagr
Clifford - Garbutt - Glass
OEL - Martin
Alzner - Subban
Irwin - Lovejoy
Bobrovsky
Bishop
$1.1 mil remaining. I really skimped on the 4th line, but no ELC's, which was a challenge within itself. Almost put Engelland in on my 4th as a troll. I was more trying to build a complete team, rather than putting goal scorers on my 4th line.
Edited for easier reading

Re: Best cap compliant roster?
You gotta lose Bickell, I40...at $4 million you can do better, he's been useless this year...scratched at a point, I think recently too...that'd be my only real
on the team you posted it...it's not a fast team up there at forward, I'd recommend Macey Raymond at a dollar. Gives you some big pockets at the deadline...

Re: Best cap compliant roster?
Im not real worried about speed up front my team is going to obstruct in the playoffs and score 2 goals 1.8 goals per game.
