Steve mason signs a 3 year deal
3 years 12.3 with the Flyers. He has played well for them.

Too much money for a guy like Mason.
But, with the trend of severely overpaying goalies, it fits.

Adam Proteau @Proteautype 2m
Flyers sign a goalie to a lucrative three-year contract extension. You know what that means: Flyers fans can begin the Five Stages of Grief.

Yep. I really hope this is the beginning of the decline.penny lane wrote:Adam Proteau @Proteautype 2m

I'd probably break the psychopath test with regard to the Bruins and Flyers.

Re: Steve mason signs a 3 year deal
They should have given him one more year or maybe 2. I wouldnt have committed to 3 years yet. If he keeps it up though, its a steal.

Re: Steve mason signs a 3 year deal
Mason's first 24 career games (about two month's time): 14-9-1, 1.74 GAA, .939 save pct., 6 SO
Mason's next 198 games: 82-90-26, 3.04 GAA, .899 save pct., 13 SO
---
Mason's first 24 games as a Flyer (about two month's time): 11-10-2, 2.10 GAA, .935 save pct., 1 SO
Mason's next 19 games: 12-3-3, 2.77 GAA, .902 save pct., 0 SO
The Flyers starting to try to find some more offense and having some success it would appear, as evidence by the W-L totals...but Mason as an individual, is - statistically - tracking downward. And that does match the eye test. Early in the season, he was far and away their best player. And for the season, as a whole, he still has been. But some of the goals that he's let up lately are not ones that he had been allowing in October...some shots are starting to bore a hole through him and that's good news. Hopefully, he just kind of returns to being the Steve Mason we all know and hate...
I didn't cherry pick that split either, it was just for parallelism. Since Dec. 1, he has a .899 save pct. and two less wins. The games that would be taken out on a Dec. 1 split are 25/26 vs. Wpg. and 34/36 vs. Nsh. So, they would both raise the GAA to whatever degree...probably north of 2.90 but south of 3.00.

Re: Steve mason signs a 3 year deal
Given their history with goalies, it's hard to believe that they think Mason is the answer.

They should have traded for Luongo when he was on the market.

Being Philly and all, I'd expect him to be traded within the week.

Second time in a week that he was pulled. He gave up 5 to Nashville on 1/11 and got the hook.littlemoonboot wrote:And so it begins.llipgh2 wrote:Mason was pulled tonight. Haha!![]()

The cap hit is as effective as a full NMC.Lt. Dish wrote:Wait, wait, wait: No NMC? I am disappoint.
Odd move as Giroux hits >$8million and Read goes from $900k, to >$3million. They have 9 forwards sign next year, and 6 of them will make more than $3mil. Is their system that deep? They might need 3-4 guys to step up.

If by system, you're referring to prospect pool, then in that case it's one of the worst in the league, if not the worst.

Re: Steve mason signs a 3 year deal
I dont understand what he means by need 3-4 to step up. Giroux, lecavalier, simmonds, hartnell, couturier is a well rounded group. There isnt a ton of need for people to step up really big. Im more worried about the blue line if im a flyers fan.

Re: Steve mason signs a 3 year deal
Maybe that they'll need entry-level help, a la Chicago or LA with guys like Saad or Toffoli or King?
But yeah, that blueline is painfully slow...they better hope Morin and Gostisbehere are gems...I don't think Morin's upside is all that great, but he'll be a very good NHLer I do believe...
