Random Question - Chara related

Post by bhaw »

As we've heard like 2837435437 times by now, Chara was granted an exception on having a stick longer than the allowable max.

If another player lost a stick and he handed them his, is that legal? I mean, I doubt a ref would ever know or call it, but is it technically legal if he handed his stick off to another player who lost theirs?

I would assume so. I mean players carry the goalie a new stick when he loses it in the corner and they don't call that.

It will never come into play because he isnt ever going to be the second best defenseman on the ice on his team.

Clearly not asking in a practical sense. So that response doesn't really answer anything.

No one that big thats good enough to demonstrate a need for a bigger stick than otherwise legal will be the second most useful defenseman on the ice when someone is without a stick and no forward is going to get a stick that size. Does that work better?

This, but he could give it to a goaltender for an EPIC pokecheck.

No. That is not the technical ruling. This has no practical application whatsoever. I'm just wanting to know, by the rule book, if another player could use Chara's stick in a situation like that.

I understand that no one else has a use for it.

what if someone on the ice broke his stick and skated by the bench for a new one and Chara, being the smart captain he is, puts his out for the guy to grab?

That's what I'm asking, c2i!!!! :)

It appears no one knows. This is why I was curious. It's obscure and may never happen, but now that I thought of the question, I need to know the answer.

lol, I know that's what you're asking, was just trying to envision a reason someone would get Chara's stick. It certainly is something that's possible.

What if a forward, equal to the height Chara and uses the same length stick, handed his stick to a teammate in need of a stick. Would that be legal?

And I'm pretty sure it would be legal since in all actuality, the stick has been deemed legal for play.

I guess therein lies the question:

Is the stick legal to play for anyone, or only the guy who had to get league approval to use it?

Its not like having a gun permit lol. Even if it were against the rules, its against the spirit of the game and not ref would ever enforce it.

I believe it's the individual player. Only players of a certain height are allowed to request it (I believe you have to be 6'4" or taller, maybe it's 6'5")...Normally, I'd say I'll ask around and see if I can find out the answer to this...but I probably won't in this case... :pop: I'll get more "wtf" responses than answers I'd think...

mikey - I'd almost be interested to know what those answers were, lol. I'm guessing the same sense I get here: people don't know and are annoyed they don't know so they figure out why it wouldn't happen.

Rylan - refer to the above. I'm not asking from a practicality standpoint. I don't know why I thought of it, but I did. Only Chara was approved to use the length of stick he has. I don't believe the stick is deemed legal in the general sense. The stick is legal for Chara to use.

We will seek the truth!

Yeah, that's part of it too, bhaw...no one is going to know the answer to this, I'll see if a chance conversation can steered towards the wacky...no promises...I really don't think there is an answer to this, much less someone actually knowing it...

John Scott and Brian Boyle, I'd guess...they have played both F and D at various points in their career, but are both forwards currently.

Well, I'd assume there is an answer. But I'm guessing you're correct that no one knows it.

A few years ago, Mike Keenan alleged that Willie Mitchell was playing with an illegal stick...so Willie created this 80-inch stick and skated out at warm-ups with it to, ahem, stick it to Keenan, so to speak...so yes, it's real, but no it's not...
