Holy crap, reading more about the cash...... they were only about 300 yards away from the venue for the charity event they had just left, in an industrial park. And some yip shot video of the burning wreckage and posted it online.

I know they were probably KOI but hard to sit there and film it. I guess they were worried it might explode but that only happens in the movies.

Cars don't "explode". You can't get that sort of gas vapor to cause anything close to what you see in the movies. A fire can spread fast, but that's only if it hits the more flammable elements under the hood.

The guy shooting video was apparently the first person on scene, so the wreckage was still very much intensely aflame.

Or in the case if a Porsche, under the trunk.

Lots of magnesium used in Porsches. No bueno for that to be around fire. Intensely hot fire, can explode. Carrera GT, beautiful car, V10, 200+ MPH capability, $500k in 2005. Doesn't take long for a car like that to get away from even a pro. RIP to the two men who died.

I've had it up to here <points to forehead> with people on Facebook posting the picture of the driver saying "No one will remember this guy"..... gee, I dunno, maybe that's because before yesterday I had never heard his name? Whereas the guy he vehicularly manslaughtered was in several films and was also an activist in an area of oceanographic conservation that's very close to my own heart.... he routinely crewed with the guys from the Marine Conservation Science Institute on the white shark tagging expeditions, and he even named one of the females after his own daughter (Meadow).

Image
Pic was taken just a couple weeks ago. That's Walker with Dr Robert Domeier, the Director of the MCSI.

So yes, dear Facebook friends, I will RIP Paul Walker and not Roger Rodas. It's an unfortunate tragedy that he died (and his 8-year old son tried to pull him from the burning car), but it does not make me a sh|thead for not mourning his passing.

Can we mourn both? They both died and left children fatherless.

I don't like the false equivalence. Roger Rodas meant nothing to me, whereas Paul Walker was someone I greatly admired. It's sad that he left behind a child, yes. But in five days, I'll have to Google his name again if I'm discussing this incident. So no, I won't mourn him.

No, but he witnessed the crash and ran to the burning wreckage to try and rescue his father.

8 years old.

Nobody was rescuing anyone. Even without that fire. Poor kid.

I've read reports of power steering fluid on the road leading up to the crash. Also they said the skid marks were straight into the tree which suggested possible steering failure, coupled with flames up front (engine of car is in the back) led somebody believe there was catastrophic steering failure.

There's a CCTV video that captures the accident (obscured behind foliage), and it appears the fire didn't start until about a minute after impact.

Additional info is that the car was reportedly quite prone to stalling or just shutting off. Walker and Rodas had taken off for a 20-minute shakedown to see if they could troubleshoot the problem and were reportedly on their way back to the fundraiser. So, for the time being, it doesn't look like it was street racing.
